One Mind for Research Welcomes General Peter W. Chiarelli as Chief Executive Officer
RUTHERFORD, Calif., March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- One Mind for Research is pleased to announce that General Peter W. Chiarelli, U.S. Army (Retired), will join the organization as Chief Executive Officer, effective March 12, 2012. General Chiarelli recently served as the Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army, where he was a tireless advocate for eliminating the stigma associated with Service Members and Veterans getting the help they need for the treatment of the invisible wounds of war. Co-founded by former Congressman Patrick Kennedy and passionate mental health advocate Garen Staglin, One Mind for Research is an independent, non-profit organization bringing together health care providers, researchers, academics and the health care industry - on a global scale - to cure all brain disorders.
"One Mind for Research will serve as the catalyst that promotes cooperation and the sharing of knowledge by advancing and resourcing promising research critical to promoting brain science and deploying effective treatments for traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress, Alzheimer's disease, depression and other conditions," said Chiarelli. "I am honored to join One Mind and look forward to building on the work I did during my time with the Army to draw attention to, and initiate support for, Active Duty Military Personnel and Veterans with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. My goal is to advance the vision of One Mind's founders to eliminate stigma and accelerate our understanding of the last frontier of the human body – the brain – so that we can provide effective cures for those suffering and their families."
In his new role, General Chiarelli will make One Mind for Research's vision of unprecedented collaboration and alignment among global stakeholders in brain research a reality. Through his leadership, One Mind for Research will facilitate public-private partnerships throughout the world, accelerating discovery and dissemination of disease modifying preventions, diagnoses, treatments and cures.
"General Chiarelli has demonstrated incredible dedication and passion throughout his career, and we could not be more pleased for him to continue his tradition of excellence – especially in addressing brain disorders – with One Mind for Research," said former Congressman Patrick Kennedy, Co-Chairman of One Mind for Research. "It is fitting for us to make this announcement during Brain Awareness Week, which is an opportunity for us all to recognize the work and awareness that still need to be made in this area."
"We conducted a global search for the CEO position, and General Chiarelli was the clear choice. His almost 40 years of distinguished service in the U.S. Army has given him the experience in organizing and leading large scale campaigns around the world. His experience in testifying before Congress, and working with the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and Veteran Affairs, will all be very important in his new role," said Garen Staglin, Co-Chairman of One Mind for Research. "General Chiarelli was the perfect choice to lead our efforts."
One Mind for Research defined the first global scientific roadmap for curing diseases of the brain within 10 years and initiated a broad-based, international coalition of renowned neuroscientists, advocates, policy makers and others. General Chiarelli will lead the organization by working with partners to advance the plan by creating needed changes in the way health care professionals, scientists, the health care industry, and government partners think about and conduct research and, when warranted, champion changes in mental health related public policy.
