Online Petition to End Daylight Saving Time Quickly Gaining Momentum
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, tens of millions of Americans experienced the "dark side" of Daylight Saving Time when they commuted home from work in the dark.
Sure, we get an extra hour of sleep when we set our clocks back that one day, but is it worth it? According to a poll conducted by EndDaylightSavingTime.org, the majority of Americans (74%) want both one time and later sunsets all year round.
The poll of 1,147 adults—with a margin of error of 4%—was conducted across the U.S. Sunday Oct. 29 through Tuesday Oct. 31.
"Both time changes and earlier sunsets have a lot of unwanted side effects," said Anthony Boldin, founder of EndDaylightSavingTime.org. "The American people seem to realize there are more problems than benefits."
A growing body of independent research has shown that time changes affect our health, sleep patterns, children's focus in school, and worker productivity and safety. Additionally, earlier sunsets cause increases in depression (SAD), traffic accidents and fatalities, and higher crime due to darker streets.
Petition in Progress
Boldin's goal is to gather 100,000 signatures to get the attention of Congress. "As we achieve that goal, we will reach out to lawmakers to introduce a bill in Congress," said Boldin. "It's a long process, but the first steps are exceeding expectations."
Petitions have been collecting at a rate topping 200/hour. On Facebook, fans have surpassed 100,000 in under two weeks.
"We have been amazed by how fast this is picking up steam," said Boldin. "The only way something like this works is by friends telling friends."
Added Boldin: "If you're one of the tens of millions of Americans who wants to do away with Daylight Saving Time, please sign our Online Petition to make this change a reality. Our lives could be brighter, safer and happier."
