Online Tax Loophole's Days are Numbered
Judiciary "principles" foreshadow action in the House
ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) applauded principles released today by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte highlighting the way forward on legislation to close the decades-old loophole that gives special treatment to online-only retailers. RILA Senior Vice President for Government Affairs Bill Hughes highlighted the need for the House to act following an overwhelming affirmative vote in the Senate earlier this year.
"The release of principles from House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte is a solid first step toward a legislative solution in the House. These principles make clear that the current system is broken, and that the Chairman is committed to closing the online sales tax loophole once and for all.
"Those who have sought to preserve special treatment in the tax code and have fought reform are fighting a losing battle. Chairman Goodlatte has made clear by issuing his principles that the House will act to close this loophole and restore basic free market principle for retailers. Movement in the House coupled with the overwhelming bipartisan vote in the Senate earlier this year means the online tax loophole's days are numbered.
"This states' rights approach is supported by governors and state legislators across the country, as well as the countless Main Street merchants who invest locally, create jobs, pay property taxes, and contribute meaningfully to their communities."
RILA is the trade association of the world's largest and most innovative retail companies. RILA members include more than 200 retailers, product manufacturers, and service suppliers, which together account for more than $1.5 trillion in annual sales, millions of American jobs and more than 100,000 stores, manufacturing facilities and distribution centers domestically and abroad.
