Out Of This World: New South Wales Artist Crowdfunds $16K in 7 Days to Host Space-Art Exhibition
SYDNEY, Nov. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Artist, Cathrin Machin, is enjoying the success of her striking interstellar phenomenon oil paintings, with her campaign hitting 100% of its sales target within ten hours on Kickstarter.
Described as 'beautifully nerdy deep-space paintings and prints,' the 30-day project, marks her first commercial art endeavour and has so far exceeded Cathrin's expectations, raising over 150% of her $4,000 AUD target in just 24 hours.
The Kickstarter campaign has attracted the attention from a host of backers, each pledging funds towards the exhibition, and has currently bypassed $16,500 AUD with 23 days still remaining.
Cathrin, who is originally from the West Midlands, England, who now lives in Shellharbour, New South Wales, is combining her passion for art and space-based imagery. Following a childhood love for science, Cathrin studied fine art and graphic design before starting a degree in mechanical engineering at Loughborough University.
Following a decade-long 3D character art and production career in the videogames industry, Cathrin moved to Australia and led the award-winning team who won the "Best Australian Video Game" title for "Warhammer: Regicide" at the 2015 IGN Black Beta awards.
Since setting up on her own, Cathrin has identified a niche area of the market, and the space art paintings have been transformed into high-quality prints, and sold using a Kickstarter project campaign.
Speaking about her inspiration for the project, Cathrin said, "I could buy paintings on practically every subject, but to find anything that featured deep space was near impossible. It's unbelievable that there are so few artworks of possibly the most beautiful things in the universe. Something had to be done."
With the prints brightening up the home, office and studio, Cathrin has been inundated with requests including commissioned pieces, and is fulfilling her childhood ambition of hosting her own exhibition which is to be held at the M2 Gallery in Surry Hills, Sydney on the 3rd December 2016.
