An annual highlight of the conference is the Black Enterprise Small Business Awards, which gives national recognition to the outstanding African American entrepreneurs who own some of America's best small businesses. Twelve finalists in four categories—Innovator of the Year, Family Business of the Year, Franchise Owner of the Year and Teenpreneur of the Year—hail from across America, span a diverse range of industries and include entrepreneurs as young as 13 years old.

Now age 13, Penn donates 10% of the profits from her business to charities, including Hosea Feed the Hungry, the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Captain Planet Foundation and Live Thrive Atlanta.
