PA Liquor Control Board Urges Fans to Keep Sporting Events Safe with Responsible Consumption
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Concerned about the growing number of alcohol related incidents at sporting events nationwide, PLCB Chairman Patrick J. "PJ" Stapleton today urged spectators to keep game day safe, and urged those over 21 to "Enjoy Responsibly."
"Every week, all across Pennsylvania, people come together to celebrate the love of the game," said Liquor Control Board Chairman Patrick J. "PJ" Stapleton. "Safe and responsible consumption should be your first priority. As a fan, you owe it to yourself, and to the family sitting next to you, to ensure they can leave the ballpark as safely as they arrived."
Stapleton said the Board became increasingly alarmed after recent attacks on fans across the country, where excessive use of alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
"Enjoying an alcoholic beverage during a sporting event is something that many people over the age of 21 have grown accustomed to," Stapleton said. "But the recent reports of senseless violence should serve as a strong reminder of the dangers associated with binge and problematic drinking."
According to a University of Minnesota study, many fans leaving games are intoxicated, while alcohol laws are poorly enforced at stadiums. Researchers took breathalyzer tests of 362 fans at 13 baseball and three National Football League games and found 8 percent were legally drunk, while 40 percent had at least something to drink.
Stapleton said the Board will continue to work closely with sports venues and team representatives across Pennsylvania, including those at the collegiate level, to educate fans about the importance of knowing their own personal limits, and consuming within them.
"While we are fortunate to have so many major and minor league teams in Pennsylvania, no one can turn a blind eye to the increasing number of reports of alcohol-fueled violence at these sporting events," Stapleton said. "In the coming weeks, we'll be reaching out to college and university officials, as well as the professional team representatives, pledging our continued support in combatting alcohol abuse and misuse before, during and after the game."
