SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Pac Heights, a novel by Tony Perez-Giese, has been voted "Best Self-Published Novel of 2013". The book—set in San Francisco during the dot.com boom and bust of 2000—was one of ten finalists selected by Underground Book Reviews for its annual contest. The award-winning novel chronicles the adventures of a young man who is accidentally hired by the trophy wife of a billionaire after a mix-up at a temp agency. Pac Heights provides a humorous look at the excesses of the ultra-wealthy, but also examines the dark side of life in the top 1%.

"I'm really honored to win this award," Perez-Giese says. "Self-publishing has become a legitimate force in the industry, and it's great that Underground Book Reviews has taken the time to recognize these novels."
Pac Heights was released by Archway Publishing (a Simon & Schuster imprint) in June 2013. "Sales have been fantastic," says Perez-Giese. "The way in which self-publishing has evolved has made it a much more viable option than it was just a couple years ago."
Perez-Giese says that he tried to sell the book through traditional channels before deciding to put Pac Heights out himself.
"It was a scary idea," the author says. "I'd spent so much time securing a literary agent in New York and then chasing deals through her that I was really unsure about going it alone. In the end, it came down to the simple fact that as a writer your main focus is getting people to read your work. I'd been patient for three years, and nothing was happening. So I took the leap, and it's been one of the best decisions of my life."
Pac Heights is available through Archway Publishing, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and other online stores. "It was also really important for me that people could go into bookstores and get a copy," says Perez-Giese. "I've been fortunate in that several independent bookstores here in San Francisco and around the country have decided to carry it. There's no better feeling for a writer than wandering into a bookstore and seeing their book on the shelves."
