PandaLabs Researchers to Present at Security BSides Las Vegas

Luis Corrons and Sean-Paul Correll to provide behind-the-scenes look into the Mariposa botnet shutdown and explore the democratization of cybercrime

LAS VEGAS, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Panda Security, The Cloud Security Company, today announced that PandaLabs technical director Luis Corrons and threat researcher Sean-Paul Correll will deliver a presentation at Security BSides Las Vegas 2010 this Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. entitled "Catch That Butterfly: Stopping Mariposa in its Tracks and Revealing a Growing Underground Network of Amateur Hackers."

In their presentation, Correll and Corrons will provide an unprecedented look into how a collaborative effort between international law enforcement officials and leading security vendors including Panda Security, successfully dismantled the Mariposa botnet in December 2009. They will also discuss developments in the case since Mariposa was taken down, how botnets like Mariposa operate and proliferate, and how hackers can successfully execute damaging botnets with little to no experience. While the Mariposa perpetrators had no formal computer training, they affected more than 50 percent of the world's Fortune 1000 companies and infected almost 13 million computers around the world.

About PandaLabs

Since 1990, its mission has been to detect and eliminate new threats as rapidly as possible to offer our clients maximum security. To do so, PandaLabs has an innovative automated system that analyzes and classifies thousands of new samples a day and returns automatic verdicts (malware or goodware). This system is the basis of collective intelligence, Panda Security's new security model which can even detect malware that has evaded other security solutions.

Currently, 99.4 percent of malware detected by PandaLabs is analyzed through this system of collective intelligence. This is complemented through the work of several teams, each specialized in a specific type of malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, phishing, spam, etc), who work 24/7 to provide global coverage. This translates into more secure, simpler and more resource-friendly solutions for clients.
