Panopto Reaches 400 Adoptions and 2.7 Million Students, Taking Pole Position Among Lecture Capture Vendors
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Panopto announced today that it had signed its 400th institutional license agreement since 2008 with North Carolina A&T State University, bringing its user count to more than 2.7 million students. Over the last three years, Panopto has deployed more campus-wide adoptions than all other lecture capture vendors combined, with Red Herring magazine naming Panopto as one of the top 100 private companies in North America for its rapid growth and strong product vision. "We're honored to have been selected by so many institutions in such a short period of time," said Bill Guttman, Executive Chairman of Panopto. "Our beginnings at Carnegie Mellon University gave us firsthand insight into what professors, students, and administrators look for in a lecture capture solution, and our early focus on flexible capture and user experience set the stage for the rapid growth we're seeing today."
Many leading universities have recognized the clear differences between lecture capture solutions. "After a thorough analysis of competing systems, Duke University selected Panopto to replace its previous-generation solution," said Steve Toback, Senior Manager and Media Architect at Duke's Office of Information Technology. "Features, robustness, and support coverage were major factors in Duke's decision to make Panopto available campus-wide. A year later, Panopto is recording over 1700 hours of classroom instruction each month and we foresee rapid adoption in the future."
Panopto has released four major versions of its lecture capture product, Panopto Focus, and unveiled a complementary media management product, Unison, this past July. Eric Burns, Panopto's co-founder and Chief Product Officer, said, "together, Focus and Unison provide a complete solution for capturing, managing, searching, and delivering video in any organization. Between Focus's powerful, flexible capture and broadcast technology and Unison's simple, drag-and-drop import, captioning, and search of archival and third-party content, there are few media scenarios Panopto can't handle."
Industry analysts have taken note. "Panopto has come on strong in the past year, jumping on a new openness in higher education to cloud-based lecture capture and a desire for lower-cost, PC-based capture," said Alan Greenberg, senior analyst and partner, Wainhouse Research. "Delivering certain features early in its product life cycle such as live webcasting, interactive note taking, strong search, and web-based media editing tools, the company is in a position to continue to thrive going forward."
