Florida Businessman Vindicated in Libel Case After Federal Jury Finds Online Posts on Ripoff Report to be False and Defamatory
WESTFIELD, N.J., March 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- After trial in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida on February 21, 2017, a jury found in favor of Paul Lagassey in his libel case (Case No. 2:14-cv-14303-KAM) against Philippe Roy. The jury awarded Mr. Lagassey damages, including punitive damages, for the false and defamatory statements Mr. Roy made on the Ripoff Report website at www.ripoffreport.com accusing Mr. Lagassey of committing criminal acts. Mr. Roy was also found to have infringed a copyrighted photograph of Mr. Lagassey used in the posts on the Ripoff Report. By the terms of a Court Order entered March 2, 2017, Mr. Roy is the subject of an injunction regarding the Ripoff Report posts and use of the copyrighted photograph. After the verdict, counsel and the parties negotiated a global settlement resolving all the disputes between Messrs. Lagassey and Roy regarding their interests in several different software development companies that have been the subject of several state court litigations in Florida, and reached agreement to work together to protect and enforce copyrights on software and know-how held by Conceptual Speech Technologies, LLC.
