Patient identification Platform and West Ridge Obstetrics & Gynecology Honored as Recipients of the 2016 Microsoft Health Innovation Awards
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Patient identification Platform (Patient iP) and its customer West Ridge Obstetrics & Gynecology (WROG) have been named recipients of Microsoft Corp.'s 2016 Health Innovation Awards.
The awards, announced at the 2016 HIMSS Annual Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas, recognize health organizations and their technology solution partners for using Microsoft devices and services in innovative ways that help enhance care delivery for individuals and communities, connect care teams with consumers, deliver data-driven insights to clinicians, and streamline clinical and business processes. The 2016 winners are transforming the industry by creating breakthrough solutions that empower health and life sciences organizations, while meeting global, local and industry-specific compliance and security standards.
The Patient iP solution, deployed at WROG, was recognized for its impact in the category of "Building the Intelligent Cloud Platform." The Patient iP technology, developed with Microsoft's suite of technologies including Azure and SQL, improves the historically manual and time-intensive process of "patient matching" for clinical trial participation. The Platform securely processes electronic patient data, removing any PHI yet maintaining all other relevant demographic, lab, genomic, procedure and diagnosis data; from here clinical trial protocols – specifically, inclusion and exclusion criteria – are applied in real-time to identify those that are potentially suitable for a study.
Despite collecting patient data electronically over many years, WROG, a Rochester, NY based practice with 12 well-respected physicians, five certified nurse practitioners and a top-notch team of managers and employees, believed it wasn't fully benefiting from its substantive database. The group knew that there was valuable insight within its 66,000 patient records, insight that could potentially lead to treatment options for patients with conditions where the current treatment wasn't overly efficacious, yet the group lacked the analytic resources to evaluate the data against open clinical trials seeking to advance therapies for women's conditions. This is what led WROG to engage with Patient iP.
"We were all very impressed that the Patient iP technology, in less than 90 seconds, identified over 1,800 of our patients that met the criteria for an open trial on a common, chronic condition. Even with our electronic records system, this exercise would have taken the best data analyst weeks to complete," said Marc Eigg, MD, managing partner and CFO at West Ridge Obstetrics & Gynecology. "We expect that our relationship with Patient iP will allow us to proactively impact the quality of life for our patients and as such, further distinguish us as one of the most patient-centered practices in Rochester."
"The entire Patient iP team is thrilled to be recognized by Microsoft for the contributions we are focused on making to patient care. At the end of the day, our Platform provides clinicians with the ability to engage patients around clinical research participation that could significantly improve their daily functioning or even extend their lifespan. And it's gratifying to know that physicians utilizing our Platform feel as if years of data entry and regulatory compliance can finally pay off in truly meaningful ways," said Michael J. Margiotta, chairman and CEO of Patient identification Platform. He added that since practices are typically reimbursed for trial enrollment, the ability to match patients using technology as opposed to human resources means that groups can capitalize on revenue opportunities with little to no administrative overhead.
"The health industry is undergoing a seismic shift in which intelligent technologies are helping organizations, communities and individuals improve care by helping them better understand and share information," said Laura Wallace, vice president, Health & Life Sciences, Microsoft. "This year's Microsoft Health Innovation Award recipients are advancing the goals of improved patient engagement and care coordination through their pioneering use of Microsoft devices, platforms and cloud services."
Nominations were submitted by health providers, payers, pharmaceutical and life science organizations, and public and private health institutions across the world for applying Microsoft technology to create transformative and highly-effective innovations. An esteemed panel of industry experts selected this year's winners based on how their innovation represents a forward-thinking development or implementation of a solution that is delivering groundbreaking results and producing better health outcomes for more people. Recipients will be highlighted on the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/healthinnovationawards and on the Microsoft in Health blog at http://www.microsoft.com/health/ww/blog/Pages/index.aspx.
