Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection Displays its Sherman Tank at Local Theater to Celebrate the Opening of the Movie "Fury"
EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Flying Heritage Collection (FHC) will be displaying a 30-ton Sherman tank at the Regal Stadium 16 theater at Everett Mall on Saturday, October 18th for the first full day of the showing of "Fury," a new World War II tank movie starring Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf. FHC staff will be loading and transporting a 30-ton Sherman tank from their facility at Paine Field to the theater, and will also be on hand to provide more information about the historical military vehicle.
Sony Pictures' "Fury" tells the story of a weary, battle-scarred American tank crew in the last year of World War II and features a Sherman tank nicknamed Fury. Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection, which exhibits and operates vintage and iconic military planes and vehicles, will bring this element to life for moviegoers by exhibiting a Sherman tanks from its collection that is similar to the one seen on the big screen.
"With the Sherman tank Fury playing such an important role in this major film, excitement and interest in war tanks is high," said Cory Graff, FHC Curator. "We wanted to capitalize on this excitement and provide a unique experience so the public can learn more about this rare and important machine first-hand."
The 30-ton Sherman was the most common tank type used by the U.S. during World War II, and was the most-produced tank in U.S. history. While never the best tank on the battlefield, Sherman tanks could be made quickly and in great numbers. Crewmen complained about how easily a Sherman would explode and burn when hit, and gave the tank grim nicknames like "the Tommy Cooker" and "Zippo" (it lights the first time, every time).
The FHC's Sherman tank will be on display near the doors of Everett Mall Regal Stadium 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 18th. Theater and mall visitors will be able to examine the historical machine up close, capture photos and ask FHC volunteers about the famous armored vehicle that was both loved and hated by American tank crews.
Visitors can also present a "Fury" ticket stub from Regal Stadium 16 to receive half-price admission to the FHC and see the entire collection of military aircraft and vehicles.
The Flying Heritage Collection is operated by Friends of Flying Heritage, a 501 (c)(3) organization committed to educating the public about these rare, historic aircraft. In 1998, Paul G. Allen began acquiring and preserving these iconic warriors and workhorses, many of which are the last of their kind. Allen's passion for aviation and history, and his awareness of the increasing rarity of original WWII aircraft, motivated him to restore these artifacts to the highest standard of authenticity and share them with the public.
