Penguin Computing Selects Dot Hill Storage for High-Performance Computing Solutions

LONGMONT, Colo., Nov. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: HILL), a leading provider of Unified Virtual Storage and SAN storage solutions, today announced that Penguin Computing, a global leader in high-performance computing (HPC) delivering complete, integrated HPC solutions from the workstation to the cloud, has selected the Dot Hill AssuredSAN™ 3000 Series as a key component for its HPC storage solutions.
Under the terms of the agreement, Penguin will leverage Dot Hill's award-winning AssuredSAN 3000 Series storage systems. Offering 8Gb Fibre Channel, 10Gb iSCSI and 6Gb SAS host interface options, the AssuredSAN 3000 Series is optimized for Linux environments and supports demanding workloads and solid performance with five 9's of availability, using many of Dot Hill's patented technologies.

Penguin delivers a range of solutions, from massive Linux clusters to cluster management solutions based on Penguin's Scyld ClusterWare, to "Penguin Computing on Demand" (POD), a new public HPC cloud. Typical configurations include Penguin branded servers, I/O nodes, 10GigE or InfiniBand fabric, racks, power delivery, storage subsystem and installation and professional services.
Penguin will offer the highest performing 3003 models primarily with SAS host interfaces, in 2u12 and 2u24 storage solutions with drives. The drives will encompass all drive types and spindle speeds (including SSD in some cases) depending on customer needs.

Dot Hill AssuredSAN 3000 Series arrays offer support for 8Gb Fibre Channel storage area networks (SANs), 10Gb iSCSI, as well as other 'state of the art' interface options. In addition, Dot Hill continues to add midrange capability and value to its 3000 Series with options such as AssuredRemote data management software for remote replication. Advanced data management such as AssuredCopy™, Dot Hill's volume copy technology, enabling the creation of independent data volume copies for additional data protection, and Dot Hill's AssuredSnap™ snapshot capability for improved data availability and business continuity, allow companies to reduce the burden of meeting modern data retention policies. The AssuredSAN 3000 systems can scale to a total of 288 terabytes of storage with inexpensive JBOD expansion units.
The AssuredSAN 3000 Series features a number of eco-friendly enhancements such as drive spin-down capability and 595-watt 80 PLUS-rated (greater than 80 percent energy efficiency) power supplies for reduced operating costs. Additionally, the AssuredSAN 3000 Series also features Dot Hill's patented EcoStor™ "green" battery-free alternative for cache memory, which leverages a combination of super capacitors and flash memory that outlasts traditional batteries nearly fivefold.
