Pennsylvania Education Secretary Pedro Rivera Visits Westmoreland County's Derry Area School District on Schools That Teach Stop
DERRY, Pa., Dec. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- State Education Secretary Pedro A. Rivera made a visit to Derry Area School District in Westmoreland County Thursday to speak with administrators, teachers, and students as part of the Wolf Administration's Schools That Teach tour.
During his visit, Rivera shared with teachers, administrators, and students Governor Tom Wolf's vision for improving education for every student regardless of zip code.
Rivera highlighted the state's historic investment in education – more than $640 million additional over two years – that Governor Wolf secured in consecutive state budgets. The state investment is being directed to classrooms around Pennsylvania to implement programs from pre-kindergarten to postsecondary, that will positively impact student achievement.
"Through Schools That Teach visits around Pennsylvania I have had the opportunity to see firsthand how schools are using the record state investment in education that Governor Wolf secured over the past two years to impact education for their students," Rivera said. "I've seen many innovative programs and student-centered approaches to ensuring students have access to the tools to help them thrive in today's ever-changing environment.
"After every visit I leave with an example of how a school is meeting students' needs, and ideas about best practices I can share with other education leaders in Pennsylvania."
During a roundtable discussion, administrators outlined several initiatives the district has put in place to invest in student achievement and to address community challenges including poverty and family engagement initiatives, early childhood education initiatives, professional development, and focusing on literacy and college and career readiness.
Rivera also took the opportunity to meet with students, teachers, and staff in several of the districts buildings, including participating in a student-led discussion at Grandview Elementary School, visiting Derry Area Middle School's media center, and touring the technology wing of Derry Area High School.
"Making Schools That Teach visits across the commonwealth allows me the opportunity to see how communities are celebrating teaching and learning," Rivera said. "Pennsylvanians know that an investment in our students, is an investment in our local communities, and in our state."
