Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and Harrisburg Senators Team Up to Curb Underage Drinking
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, or PLCB, is teaming with the Harrisburg Senators to remind kids and parents that underage drinking is dangerous and illegal.
The 2010 poster campaign, "The Signals are Clear," merges the popularity of the baseball team's players with the importance of alcohol awareness in an effort to better educate teens.
"The statistics regarding alcohol use among teens are troubling," said PLCB Chairman Patrick J. "PJ" Stapleton. "According to 2009 survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than 40 percent of teens reported drinking some amount of alcohol, with almost 30 percent saying they rode with a driver who was under the influence. We need to make sure we are doing everything we can to educate our kids about the devastating effects these actions can have."
Stapleton reminded parents to learn to recognize the signs of alcohol use among young people.
"Many times, parents don't have the information they need to spot the problem," Stapleton said. "Slurred speech, red or flushed eyes or simply the odor of alcohol on someone's breath should be a cause for concern. The more that we, as parents, can do to educate ourselves, the better equipped we'll be to protect our kids from the dangers of underage drinking."
For more than 20 years, the PLCB has partnered with organizations like the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pirates, Penn State University, Temple University and nearly all of Pennsylvania's minor league baseball teams in an effort to combat underage and binge drinking among young people.
Copies of the 2010 "The Signals are Clear" poster will be given away at upcoming events. Consumers may request a free copy by calling (800) 453-PLCB or by visiting www.lcb.state.pa.us.
