HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Departments of Public Welfare (DPW) and of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) are sponsoring the 2014 PA Veterans Forum, Community and Connections, Nov. 18-19 at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg/Hershey.
The two-day forum is aimed at: veterans and their families, behavioral health administrators and clinicians, county human service administrators and professionals who work with veterans.
There will be sessions on: treating post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction, military culture, innovative housing and employment programs, the effects of deployment and reintegration on military families, veteran job retention, health information resources, living with traumatic brain injury, a primer on commonwealth employment and more.
"Our veterans and their families have given so much," DPW Secretary Bev Mackereth said. "We hope this conference can help veterans, their families and those who work with them to better understand veterans and the issues they may face."
Mackereth will participate in a plenary session the first day with Department of Drug & Alcohol Programs Secretary Gary Tennis; Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel; Brig. Gen. Jerry G. Beck Jr., deputy adjutant general of veteran's affairs at the DMVA; and other state officials.
"Despite being strong, well-trained warriors, it's not always easy for our service members to assimilate back into life as it once was," Beck said. "This forum will give veterans, as well as the people who work closest with them, the knowledge and resources needed to assist Pennsylvania's veteran community."
The cost is $50, which includes tuition, continental breakfast, luncheon and break foods. There are a limited number of paid scholarships available on a first-come, first-served basis for veterans who register. The forum will be from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. both days. Professionals attending may be eligible for continuing education credits.
Registration is available online at www.drexelmed.edu/bhe; click on the conferences link on the left.
