DENVER, May 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- PlainSmart, the first comprehensive wellness and weight-management clinic with Colorado roots, seems to have the "DNA of a pioneer" in the ever-growing $61 billion weight-loss industry. Today, PlainSmart announced the addition of DNA testing, a scientific breakthrough in understanding how metabolic markers can guide weight-loss programs that are customized for each person's genetic predisposition.
DNA tests are generally associated with paternity matching, ancestry, disease prevention and investigations. However, after new research indicated that a person's genes can affect their ability to lose weight, and dieters on genetically-appropriate nutrition plans can lose up to 76 percent more weight*, PlainSmart strategically added DNA testing to its progressive, personalized approach to weight management.
"Weight loss is a personal journey. And, nothing is as personal as DNA, so we recognized it was time to bring them together for the best possible weight-management outcome," said Jonathan Harding, President and COO of PlainSmart.
DNA testing is one of the diagnostic tools PlainSmart uses to gain insight through a scientific process that's unique to PlainSmart – and based on the uniqueness of its clients. The combination of Body Composition Analysis (BCA), meetings with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), a customized plan according to genetics, digital tracking and monitoring, and ongoing support from medical professionals, integrate science, technology and relationships for a personalized weight-loss program that's true to each client.
"DNA testing identifies a body's strengths and weaknesses in processing nutrients, as well as personal requirements for physical activity. When we look at a client's genetic profile, we can interpret the markers and understand how their body is able (or not able) to metabolize foods," said Kassandra Gyimesi, RDN, PlainSmart's clinic director. "The report guides a lifetime nutrition plan that is medically sound, realistic and created solely for each individual's needs and lifestyle. With these diagnostic tools, we can pinpoint a client's metabolic rate, body composition and how his or her body responds to macronutrients – focusing on unique needs for optimal weight-loss success."
The process begins with a simple cheek-swab DNA test, which reveals a genetic profile for key markers related to nutrition and behavior, including the following:
- Processing of macronutrients such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and how to properly proportion them within a nutrition plan;
- Ideal intensity and duration of physical activity for weight, energy and overall health; and
- Tendency to develop and maintain healthy eating habits.
Based on those results, PlainSmart's wellness and weight-management program includes personal consulting with an RDN, integrating three key elements: 1) testing and diagnosis; 2) one-on-one consultations; and 3) personalized nutrition plans and programs, guided by the genetic profile and RDN feedback. In addition, consultations include physical activity recommendations for lowering fat percentage, as well as ongoing monitoring with weekly body composition analysis, technology tools and reinforcement. The program cost starts at $295.
"PlainSmart's personalized approach to weight loss supports a new 'culture of customization' – from wellness products to services – that's tailored for consumers. Since nothing is as unique as DNA or as personal as weight loss, it's no surprise that we are moving toward customization, as well," Harding added.
PlainSmart opened its inaugural location in Englewood, Colo., in July 2015, with a growth plan to add more clinics in Colorado. Its guiding principles and local roots continue to embrace the spirit of Denver's health-minded, active and more-innovative culture. PlainSmart's namesake reinforces a "just plain smart" approach to wellness and sustainable weight-management.
PlainSmart's clinic is located at 401 W. Hampden Place (Broadway and Hampden), in Englewood. For additional information and scheduling with an RDN, visit http://www.PlainSmart.net, or contact 720-214-7949.
