Platform Computing's Collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Recognized as 2011 Computerworld Honors Laureate
TORONTO, June 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Platform Computing, the leader in cluster, grid and cloud management software, today announced that its collaboration and technology partnership with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has been recognized as a 2011 Honors Laureate candidate by Computerworld. The annual award program, which honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change, recognized CERN’s groundbreaking research. The research was made possible by its implementation of the world’s largest cloud computing environment for scientific collaboration, which is managed by Platform Computing.
“When embarking upon a project like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we need every ounce of computing power possible and to be recognized as an Honors Laureate only inspires us more,” said Dr. Helge Meinard, head of the group responsible for the facilities processing LHC data. “We are considering Platform Computing’s products to help us scale and maximize a one-of-a-kind HPC environment to help our dedicated team of scientific researchers to unravel the complexities of the universe.”
“Platform Computing has been enabling distributed computing environments for over 18 years and our growth into cloud computing is now able to connect researchers worldwide to conduct transformative scientific work on a global scale,” said Songnian Zhou, CEO, Platform Computing. “We are truly honored to support the work of CERN as a technology collaborator and thrilled to see their dedicated team recognized among this year’s elite group of Computerworld Honors.”
“The number and quality of nominations this year were very inspiring and demonstrate how valuable IT is to community change,” said John Amato, publisher, Computerworld. “Computerworld is very proud to name the 2011 class of Laureates and showcase their initiatives benefiting society through innovative uses of IT.”
As a 2011 Honors Laureate, CERN considers employing Platform ISF to manage its cloud computing environment, effectively allowing more than 12,000 scientists and researchers across 68 countries to work together to unlock the origins of the universe. The Computerworld Honors awards will be presented at the Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony & Gala Awards on June 20, 2011 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
