PORT OF HUENEME, Calif., April 28, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Ventura County Board of Supervisors last week recognized the Port of Hueneme for its environmental initiatives, presenting it with a County of Ventura 2017 Earth Day Award for Excellence in Environmental Stewardship. The award was presented by Supervisor Kelly Long to Oxnard Harbor District Commissioner Mary Anne Rooney and Port Director & CEO Kristin Decas.
"I was honored to nominate the Port of Hueneme Oxnard Harbor District as the Third District recipient of the 2017 Earth Day Award for their exemplary environmental efforts in Ventura County. I am so proud that our Port, which is among the most important economic drivers in our county, has made good stewardship of the environment a high priority in how they do business every day for the betterment of our community and our region," said Supervisor Long.
"The Port's longstanding tradition is to embrace the environmental values held by residents of Ventura County and the communities we serve. It certainly takes a village to succeed and we are grateful for the partners we have in the County, the collaborative processes we share, and are honored by this special recognition," said Commissioner Rooney who attended the ceremony in the Ventura County Supervisor chambers.
In 2012 the Port adopted a series of robust initiatives which included the rollout of several strategic implementation plans to advance environmental values important to the Port, including air and water quality, protection of marine resources, healthy soil and sediment, and climate change adaptation. For the last two years the Port has been an accredited member of the Green Marine program, a wholly voluntary eco-accountability program that monitors and publically publishes its members' progress towards various initiatives.
Embedded in its mission statement, the Port is committed to providing the maximum possible benefits to the people and communities it serves. "Our pursuit of strong and active environmental policies and programs will continue to be integral to the day-to-day operations of the Port of Hueneme," added Kristin Decas, CEO and Port Director.
The Port of Hueneme is one of the most productive and efficient commercial trade gateways for niche cargo on the West Coast, moving $9 billion in goods each year and consistently ranking among the top ten U.S. ports for automobiles and fresh produce.
