Prepare Early to Keep Homes Cool this Summer
Gilmore Heating, Air, Solar offers advice to keep your air conditioner running efficiently
SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As we are enjoying the mild Sacramento spring weather, we can be assured that the sweltering days of summer are quickly approaching. Gilmore Heating, Air, Solar a leading heating, air and solar company serving Sacramento since 1979, offers valuable tips to homeowners to make sure their homes are prepared before summer hits at full force.
"This is the time to make sure your air conditioning system is in perfect working order. If you test your HVAC system today and find out it is not functioning properly, you have time to come up with a solution before the weather gets unbearable," said Darrin Gilmore, general manager of Gilmore Heating, Air, Solar. "There are a few simple things homeowners can do to identify and correct issues before they become major problems to prevent high repair costs later on."
When an air conditioner sits idle for a few months, it can build up dust and debris, a small amount of maintenance is often needed to get it running efficiently. It is important to do this maintenance before the summer arrives, or residents may end up waiting several hot days for a busy service technician. To prepare now for the sweltering days ahead, Gilmore recommends the following:
Check The Filter
A dirty filter can increase energy costs and cause your unit to freeze up. One of the easiest things to do to keep the AC in tip top shape is to change the air filter regularly. The frequency will depend on the living conditions and the type of filter you are using. If there are pets in the home or someone with allergies, it is recommended to change the air filter every 20-30 days. In an "average" suburban home without pets it is best to change it every 60 – 90 days.
Look for Obstructions Around The Unit
Keeping the outdoor unit clean is a great way to lengthen the life of your AC system and prevent any issues from arising. The air conditioner needs at least 2-feet of clear space around it to function properly. Clear any branches, brush, plants and leaves from around the unit to prevent the blockage of airflow into the unit.
Schedule A Tune-up
To ensure the system is running at efficiently schedule a tune-up with a licensed professional. This process can help avoid unexpected breakdowns. Tune-ups are important for improving your HVAC efficiency, operate more safely and increase the overall lifespan of the unit. A good rule of thumb is to have your AC tune-up once a year.
