Dr. Alton said: "National Preparedness Month is the time when U.S. citizens should make plans to prepare for disasters that may affect their community. Whether the concern is about floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, or just the next severe storm, everyone should seriously evaluate how they would fare when confronted by a catastrophe.
"It has been said that the average family has about 3 days' worth of food and supplies in their storage. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, for example, many thousands of people found themselves without food, clean water and access to emergency medical care. It just makes sense to stock up on non-perishable food, clean water, and medical supplies that would be essential in the aftermath of a catastrophe."
Dr. Alton's focus is on medical preparedness, and he has written "The Survival Medicine Handbook" to help the average person deal with injuries and illness in situations when medical help is not on the way. His mission for National Preparedness Month is to put a medically prepared person in every family.
Some practical tips for disaster readiness:
- Know what disasters are common in your area. If you live in the Midwest, your community might be susceptible to tornadoes; f you live in a low-lying area, floods. In the far West, earthquakes and wildfires are a possibility.
- Have enough non-perishable food and clean water to last two weeks. Power outages may last longer than expected and cause perishables to spoil.
- Put together a good medical kit and obtain the knowledge needed to use its contents effectively. First aid classes are available in many municipalities.
- Gather a supply of flashlights, batteries, sanitation items, medicines, as well as a NOAA weather radio.
- Make a plan for communication with family members before, during, and in the aftermath of a disaster.
- Follow valuable government websites like www.ready.gov for general information and updates on ongoing events.
