Prestonwood Christian Academy Takes Top Honors At Future Problem Solving Program International Conference
Students Showcase Critical and Creative Thinking Skills at International Level
PLANO, Texas, July 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Prestonwood Christian Academy (PCA) sent eight students to the Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) Conference in June at Iowa State University where the school took top honors.
During the two-hour competition, Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) and Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Competition (MAGIC) students responded to a future scene based on the topic of space. Students brainstormed and wrote challenges, chose one in which to solve, wrote detailed solutions, developed a list of criteria questions to evaluate each solution and wrote a persuasive essay promoting their idea.
PCA sixth grader, Annie Murray, the reigning Texas State Junior Scenario Writing Champion, placed first in the scenario team writing competition. Zac Powell, an incoming junior, placed second in the MAGIC senior division and Chelsea Irvin, PCA class of 2014, placed third in the scenario competition senior division. In addition to the three top placing students from PCA, the school sent five other finalists, all incoming juniors, to the competition.
"I am incredibly proud of this talented group of students. Unlike the team qualifiers, each of these winners was given the task to compete on a team comprised of students they did not know—adding to the challenge," said Shannon Lichty, PCA's Upper School FPS coach and Pre-AP English I teacher. "The Creative Problem Solving Process taught by FPSPI is invaluable in that it teaches critical thinking and writing skills in a timed setting which helps students excel in high school and college classes and the professional world."
Each year, PCA continues to excel in this higher-level education program by competing against gifted and talented students from across the state for a chance to compete at the International level.
