Professional Vocalist Valerie Giglio Shares Inspiring Recovery Story in New Book, "Singing In My Own Key: A Vocalist's Triumph Over Stroke"
BOSTON, June 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Valerie Giglio was at the pinnacle of her singing career when a wrong turn of her neck broke two arteries leading to her brain, causing a brain stem stroke that paralyzed her entire left side and damaged her vocal cord – completely destroying her singing voice – at the age of 42. Her incredible and inspiring journey of recovery is the focus of her new book, "Singing In My Own Key: A Vocalist's Triumph Over Stroke." Due to be released in print and eBook formats on August 1, the book will be available through Valerie's official website, http://www.valeriegiglio.com/, as well as Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and many other online retailers.

"I was devastated following the stroke, but I refused to wallow in self-pity," says Valerie. "My husband, family, and my amazing health care team helped me overcome this obstacle. Now, I want to inspire others with the story of this journey."
Recovery for Valerie meant spending months re-learning how to do basic things like walk, run, and use her arm and hand. She spent several weeks in Massachusetts General and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospitals, followed by therapy at Spaulding for another year, where her grit and determination was described as "miraculous" by her therapy team. In addition, Valerie's love of singing and desire to perform again also drove her to push hard every day, and the results speak for themselves. Eight months after being confined to wheelchair by her stroke, she walked the Red Carpet at the Grammy Awards. And one year after the stroke stole her singing voice, she officially returned to the stage as a featured vocalist at Chick Singer Night Boston.
Prior to her life-threatening stroke, Valerie performed at clubs, festivals and events throughout Boston, and beyond. She released two CDs that showcased her eclectic fusion of pop and retro jazz.
"Singing In My Own Key: A Vocalist's Triumph Over Stroke" is the story of her miraculous journey to overcoming paralysis, regaining her singing voice, and returning to the stage just one year later. It is a story of hope and faith that will leave readers deeply inspired. Valerie holds a B.S. from Salem State University and a J.D. from New England School of Law. She is a member of The Recording Academy (Grammys) and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). She lives with her husband in suburban Boston, Massachusetts, owns an independent record label, and is also the founding partner of Giglio and Samson, Attorneys at Law.
