Alternative Minimum Tax Affects Middle-Class Families Too
Bijan Golkar, CFP®
CEO/Senior Advisor
FPC Investment Advisory, Inc.
Tax time is upon us once again and, for many, that means facing the dreaded alternative minimum tax (AMT). Says Golkar: "AMT was instituted in 1969 as a way to prevent those instances in which very wealthy people used deductions to escape paying any federal taxes. Unfortunately, the legislation is now capturing a growing number of middle-class families. The basic problem with AMT is that it was not designed to take into account inflation and the rising cost of living. Because of those forces, it now applies to hundreds of thousands of middle-class families. Calculating your AMT can lead to confusion because it disallows so many of the deductions that are permitted in the ordinary tax system. Those include your standard deduction, personal exemption, exemptions for dependents, deductions for interest on certain home equity loans, and miscellaneous itemized deductions."
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Golkar has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Yahoo Finance, The Fiscal Times, Bankrate, MoneyUnder30.com, MainStreet.com, InvestmentNews.com, Physician's Money Digest, and DepositAccounts.com.

Trust a Key Component in Leadership
Dr. Susan Cain
Professor of Industrial Organizational Psychology and Business
Argosy University, Chicago
"Leaders have many approaches available to them as they go to influence people around them. I argue for the trust-based approach because it yields rewards that connect people and produces long-term results. Gone are the days when we can say, 'You must or I will hurt you.' The workplace -- where most of us spend most of our time -- can become a place of transformation, serving the needs of individuals as well as the organization."
Dr. Cain is a business consultant and coach, a partner at the Corporate Learning Institute, and published author. She most recently co-authored "Horse Sense for Leaders: Building Trust-Based Relationships," which looks at trust-based relationships through the lens of "Horse Whisperer" Monty Roberts' techniques. She can speak to a variety of leadership topics, team building, innovation, conflict management, social psychology, consultation skills, and project management and strategy at the master's and doctoral level.
