EXPERT ALERTS:
Diversity in the Tech World
Kristin Toth
COO
Dolly, Inc.
"Technology, coupled with diverse perspectives and backgrounds, is an exceptional combination that leads not only to incredible products and services, but also to careers that are satisfying, lucrative, and long-lived. To fully take advantage of the opportunities, technology teams need diversity, which is something that most tech companies and teams have struggled to build. As a woman who has spent her whole career in engineering, manufacturing, operations, and technology, I'm used to being a minority in the room. However, it is exciting to set the example and break through barriers so that others may follow and lead into the future."
Toth is currently the COO of Dolly, an app that connects people needing things lifted and moved with pickup truck owners who can do just that. Her career is marked by her ability to lead and grow companies. As CEO of Code Fellows, she took the coding educational company through a rapid growth and expansion phase to multiple markets. As vice president of operations and supply chain at Zulily, she led the creation of the entirety of the operations and logistics infrastructure as the company up through IPO. In executive positions at Amazon, she led the teams that, amongst other things, created same day delivery, make-on-demand capabilities in-house, and Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player. She holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the Tauber Institute for Global Operations at the University of Michigan, a Master's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT, and a Master's degree in Business Administration from MIT's Sloan School of Management through the Leaders for Global Operations program. She is an active volunteer, serving on academic and non-profit boards, including the University of Michigan's Center for Entrepreneurship program and Seattle-based Ada Developers Academy. She is a mentor at TechStars and is on the boards of advisors for several startup companies. She is available to discuss being a COO in the technology world and everything that involves.

The Importance of Faculty Collaboration
Heather Trommer-Beardslee
Dance Program Coordinator
Central Michigan University
"It's important for educators to work together to create projects that are truly interdisciplinary -- a collaboration of ideas, concepts and genres. The humanities and the sciences work well together because it's a blending of ideas."
Trommer-Beardslee is a choreographer, dancer, interdisciplinary artist, arts administrator and educator. She is the coordinator of the Central Michigan University Dance Program, artistic director of the University Theatre Dance Company, and author of the textbook "Dance Production and Management" (Princeton Book Company, 2013). Her current projects include interdisciplinary collaborations: Transitions, an exploration in dance, music, film and conversation with military veterans; Music in Motion, a multimedia collaborative production involving live music, dance, fabric, film and light and research; choreography based in costume-specific dance and the integration of lighting technology into performance costumes; a dance film, "Waiting in the Rain," directed by Eric Limarenko; and Sand Dunes, an interdisciplinary performance involving biology, original music, dance and costumes. She is available to discuss dance and faculty collaboration.
