Sleep Awareness Week: Benefits of Corporate Fatigue Management Programs
Dave Sharar
Managing Director
Chestnut Global Partners
"Apps for detecting sleep patterns and fatigue don't address all the elements that compromise quality sleep: individual behaviors, workloads and work schedules, even one's sleep environment. A well-designed fatigue/sleep management program can dramatically reduce the amount of employees showing up to work tired, distracted, irritable and careless, promoting a safer and more harmonious -- not to mention productive -- workplace."
Studies show that most people get used to feeling fatigued, believing their lethargy, lack of focus, even "micro sleeps" are normal -- though an estimated 35-40% of Americans have undiagnosed sleeping problems that are at the root of their fatigue. Monday is the start of the National Sleep Foundation's Sleep Awareness Week. Chestnut Global Partners will do its part to raise awareness of the benefits of corporate fatigue management programs, from in-depth sleep assessments to individualized strategies for getting the "quality sleep" needed to feel fresh and alert through the day. Dr. Sharar has published over 70 articles in numerous peer reviewed, trade and business publications on topics ranging from behavioral health to corporate wellness.

Caregiving for Veterans of Hispanic Heritage
Alina Johnson
Registered Nurse, Military Caregiving
Easter Seals
Caregiving for a military member oftentimes entails close-knit family dynamics, especially within large households that at times are shared by several generations of relatives. The unique cultural experience of veterans with Hispanic heritage may present different caregiving issues later on for their caregivers, particularly compared to those issues encountered by those caring for male veterans. Says Johnson: "The unique cultural experience of veterans with Hispanic heritage may present different caregiving issues later on for their caregivers, particularly compared to those issues encountered by those caring for male veterans. Although the burden for a caregiver may be different, it is important for the caregiver to maintain and promote their close family relationships."
As the wife of a veteran retired officer in the United States Army and the mother of an Army veteran, Johnson has great knowledge of military culture and understands the needs of households oriented in this environment. Originally from Cuba, Johnson has cultural insight to the dynamics in a Hispanic family. She also has over 35 years of hands-on experience in the nursing field and caring for vets and their families at military hospitals. She studied nursing at John Hopkins University, and has served as an instructor for various branches of the armed forces, excelled in several public health roles at the federal level, and trained extensively in the most essential aspects to caregiving. She can be an invaluable resource for families currently caring for injured military veterans.

The Importance of Having a Rescue Tool in Your Car
Avi Goldstein
Paramedic, CEO of StatGear
StatGear
"There was recently a news story published about a woman who accidentally drove off a bridge into a body of water. The responding police officers were unable to break the back window to free the driver. Finally, a bystander was able to break the window with a large rock, saving the woman with only seconds to spare before the entire car was submerged. It's important to be prepared and have a rescue tool in your car in case of such an emergency."
Goldstein is a NYC-based paramedic and CEO of StatGear, which manufactures and supplies survival gear such as emergency preparedness kits, first aid kits, rescue tools and accessories.

New 'Drug-Driving' Law to Hit UK -- Should This Happen in the U.S.?
Kyle Simon
Director of Policy and Advocacy
Center for Lawful Access and Abuse Deterrence
"New legislation in the UK will allow police officers to test drivers for traces of drugs for the first time. Officers will no longer have to prove a driver was too impaired to drive -- only that they had an illegal level of drugs in their system. The new drive -- coupled with new DrugWipe testing kits -- allows police to test motorists for substances in less than 10 minutes using only a swab taken from inside a driver's cheek."
Simon is the director of policy and advocacy at the Center for Lawful Access and Abuse Deterrence (CLAAD). In his role, Simon manages policy and advocacy initiatives, provides policy analysis and drafting, directs rapid response efforts, and oversees a coalition of allied organizations focused on advancing common goals. His background includes several years of health care policy, advocacy and political experience. He has worked with policy makers on Medicare, Medicaid, and regulatory issues; served members of Congress; managed a statewide political organization representing the president of the United States; and held leadership roles in multiple political campaigns.

New Hearable Technology Tackles Hearing Loss Epidemic
Dr. Craig Kasper, Au.D., FAAA
Chief Audiology Officer
New York Hearing Doctors, New York City
Typically thought of as an ailment of the elderly, there are more than 31.5 million Americans with hearing loss, including 6 million between the ages of 18-44 years old. Says Dr. Kasper: "Only five percent of hearing loss is medically treatable with surgery or medication. The number one preventable cause of hearing loss is exposure to noise and music, which we all encounter on a daily basis. The good news is, prevention of hearing loss is something everyone can take simple measures to decrease. New advances and products in 'hearable' technology are making it easier than ever to prevent hearing loss during concerts, on your daily commute and even while traveling."

Is Sexting Cheating? How to Talk With Your Teen About Sexting
Dr. Frieda Birnbaum
Research Psychologist, Psychoanalyst
"Sexting is definitely cheating because you are seeking pleasure and gratification from another outside your relationship. Your intimate feelings, body and deepest desires are things that you share with your partner if you consent to a committed relationship. Sexting is a huge betrayal of trust. Parents, please have a true heart-to-heart conversation with your kids about the negative impact of sexting. Once a private picture is uploaded to a phone and sent to one person, there is a chance that many more unintended recipients will see it as well. The consequences of this can be devastating, and the scale of mental anguish encompasses everything from embarrassment to regret and even depression. Explain to your teen that the risks from sexting just aren't worth it."
Based in the New York metropolitan area, Dr. Birnbaum is a research psychologist, psychoanalyst and author of "What Price Power: An In-Depth Study of the Professional Woman in a Relationship." She's an expert on depression, women's issues, and attaining happiness. She has been featured on "Oprah" and "20/20" as the oldest woman in the U.S. to have twins.

Hot Flashes Can Last up to 14 Years -- What Longer-Term Treatments Are Available?
Dr. Rebecca Brightman
Attending Physician and Clinical Instructor
Mt. Sinai
"Several medical studies have recently been published surrounding menopause and its long-lasting effects on women, including a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine stating that hot flashes can last for up to 14 years for some women. Though a popular form of treatment for menopausal symptoms is hormone therapy, there continues to be a lot of controversy surrounding HRT, specifically linking it to breast cancer, especially when in use for five or more years. Another recent study from Oxford University shows that HRT is also linked to a significant increased risk for ovarian cancer. Relizen is a long-term treatment option. It is natural, non-estrogenic and clinically shown to reduce hot flashes. Relizen has already been used by over 1 million women across 13 countries and is a leading menopause treatment in France."
Dr. Brightman, an expert on hot flashes, contributes to multiple women's interest publications and appears on national shows, including the "Today" show.
