EXPERT ALERTS:
Obama's Visit to Kenya in July for Global Entrepreneurship Summit
Matt Carotenuto
Associate Professor of History
St. Lawrence University
"Having skipped Kenya during his previous three presidential visits to the African continent, the news will no doubt be met with jubilation in the land of Obama's father's birth. It will also likely be vilified by Birthers and other members of the far-right who have historically portrayed Obama's paternal heritage in East Africa as a political liability."
Carotenuto is associate professor of history and coordinator of African studies at St. Lawrence University. An expert in the history of Kenya and the Luo community (the community where Obama's father was raised), he has also researched the political discourse of the Obama-Kenya connection from both U.S. and Kenyan perspectives since 2004. With Katherine Luongo, he is the author of the article "Dala or Diaspora: Obama and the Luo Community of Kenya" and the forthcoming book "Obama and Kenya: Contested Histories and the Politics of Belonging." He is based in Canton, N.Y.

Lufthansa Faces Astronomical Losses in France Disaster
Ron McCallum
Catastrophic Injury Lawyer, Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Instructor
Simon Greenstone Panatier Bartlett, PC, in Dallas
The horrifying audio of passengers screaming in terror minutes before the Germanwings crash in the French Alps last Tuesday raises the prospect of astronomical damages against Germanwings' parent company, Lufthansa, says Dallas aviation lawyer Ron McCallum. The company could face exposure in a variety of forums, including U.S. courts, because the dead included three American citizens. Furthermore, if initial reports that the co-pilot suffered from depression -- and that he concealed his condition from his employer -- prove to be true, the tragedy illustrates the more critical issue surrounding the extreme stress under which many pilots work and the emergent need for the airline industry to address those conditions. "Many a pilot has been able to re-establish his or her flight credentials after dealing with health issues, so the co-pilot's depression shouldn't have meant the end of his career. Tragically, he ignored his doctor's orders to stay home, and the consequences were nothing short of disastrous. The industry must find a way to address the crushing stress that many pilots experience and the toll it takes on a number of them."

DHKP-C Terror Group in Turkey
Howard Eissenstat
Associate Professor of History
St. Lawrence University
In Turkey, members of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) terror group have taken a prosecutor hostage. Says Eissenstat: "The choice of target and demands the DHKP-C has made public underline how the group has -- despite a hopelessly outdated ideology -- benefited from Alevi discontent in Turkey and the police violence of the Gezi protest crackdown to expand its base."
Eissenstat, who is fluent in Turkish, is becoming known as an expert in contemporary Turkish affairs to journalists who cover events in Turkey. Most recently, he was quoted in The New York Times, Reuters, Canada's National Post and even Turkish dailies Hurriyet and Cumhuriyet. He is also a regular contributor to Amnesty International's Human Rights blog (http://humanrightsturkey.org/author/heissenstat/). He can be followed on Twitter: @heissenstat.
