New iPhone Announcement/Face ID
Marios Savvides
Director, CyLab Biometrics Center; Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering
Carnegie Mellon University
Savvides, director of the CyLab Biometrics Center at Carnegie Mellon University, is an expert in facial recognition technology and is available to talk about the technology, which will likely be included in the latest iPhone model. Says Savvides: "Unconstrained facial recognition can match faces from current cameras (which are 2D) from any angle. To truly handle the facial pose issue, you need to have a 3D representation of the face so that you could do, for example, pose correction."
Savvides is working on making facial recognition completely "unconstrained" -- that is, achieving facial recognition using video footage or photos of faces captured at any angle, lighting condition, or occlusion scenario (e.g., person is wearing sunglasses, a hat, or other article blocking a portion of the face). The implications of Savvides' research include increased accuracy (e.g., fewer false-positive matches) and increased convenience to consumers (e.g., they will not need to pose themselves in any particular way for the facial recognition to work).
