EXPERT ALERTS:
Sleep Awareness Week and Insomnia Awareness
Richard Shane, Ph.D.
Founder
Sleep Easily, LLC
Boulder, CO
Sleep Awareness Week begins April 23, 2017. Millions of people suffer from insomnia and sometimes these people know they have sleep problems, but don't how big of an overall health problem that is. Says Dr. Shane: "One-in-three people have at least one symptom of insomnia, either not going to sleep or waking during the night. It's great that National Sleep Foundation is highlighting the health impact lack of sleep can have on your life."
Dr. Shane is a sleep expert and psychotherapist with over 20 years' experience in a clinical sleep practice setting. Author of the Sleep Easily® Method Sleepguide, Dr. Shane can comment on sleep awareness and sleep related articles.

Workplace Training Can Prevent Opioid and Prescription Drug Misuse
Dr. Joel Bennett
CEO and Founder
Organizational Wellness & Learning Systems, Inc. (OWLS)
It's increasingly commonplace for employees to use prescription medication outside of intended use to improve job performance, overcome lack of sleep, or to alleviate pain. In late 2016, two national surveys indicated the need for more Rx misuse prevention in workplaces. Although 70% of employers are negatively impacted by Rx misuse, less than 25% educate workers, and 30% do not provide access to alternative treatments. A recent study showed the effectiveness of a wellness-based approach to employee training that raised awareness and encouraged the use of healthy alternatives. The training was adapted from two programs cited in the 2016 Surgeon General's report, Facing Addiction in America, as the only ones that met their criteria for effectiveness for workplace prevention. Says Dr. Bennett: "Compared to before the training, participants reported more motivation to avoid Rx and greater ability to identify healthy alternatives for dealing with pain or stress. Tackling the nationwide opioid epidemic is ultimately about helping people make better choices."
Dr. Bennett is a widely sought after speaker, consultant, and source on issues pertaining to evidence-based wellness; he has also published in a broad variety of academic, industry and business publications and consults internationally.

Stressed, Depressed, and Anxiety-Ridden: Mental Health in America
Dr. Frieda Birnbaum
Research Psychologist, Psychotherapist
An estimated 8.3 million American adults - about 3.4 percent of the U.S. population - suffer from serious psychological distress, an evaluation of federal health data concluded. Previous estimates put the number of Americans suffering from serious psychological distress at 3 percent or less, the researchers said. Says Dr. Birnbaum: "There are a number of possible reasons why an unprecedented number of Americans are suffering from mental anguish. We live in a 24/7 media culture where people never truly take a break from social media, work e-mails or even news consumption. It is mentally healthy for individuals to have some time for personal reflection and even periods of quiet. According to Project: Time Off, more than half of American workers (55%) left vacation time unused in 2015. Some Americans may be afraid to take a vacation because they fear they may lose their jobs. Foreign & domestic conflicts could be another reason why Americans suffer from stress & anxiety. It seems that we are always on the precipice of another major war or always dealing with another national tragedy at home. Americans may also not be aware of all the mental health services that are available to them. "
New York-Metropolitan-based, Dr. Frieda Birnbaum is a Research Psychologist, Psychoanalyst and Author of Life Begins at 60: A New View on Motherhood, Marriage, and Reinventing Ourselves.

Maximizing the Life of Lawncare Tools
John Kauffman, Ph.D.
Research Scientist
TruGreen
"Some of the most common backyard culprits, such as sticky sap, rust and harmful residue, can all do a number on your tools – and, in turn, your lawn and garden. To tackle rust, soak the affected metal in vinegar for about 20-30 minutes and scrub the rust off with a soft brush. For more difficult areas, try chemical rust removal products, and then use a spray-on rust guard to avoid rusting in the future. Sticky sap or plant residue will come off easily with some turpentine or kerosene. For a gentler option, try an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. For any tools or flowerpots that might have fertilizer or diseased plant residue, create a 10% bleach solution and soak them up to 30 minutes, then rinse well with water. Finally, for tools that need some extra polishing, fill a five-gallon bucket or pot with builder's sand and pour a quart of linseed oil over it. Plunge the tool in a few times to get it oiled up."
Kauffman seeks out innovative solutions to maximize TruGreen's agronomic programs and provides research and support to the company's network of regional technical managers. Kauffman has been with TruGreen since 2010, and his cooperative research has kept TruGreen at the forefront of emerging weed control and turfgrass nutrition technologies. He was also involved in the creation and implementation of TruGreen's innovative agronomic training programs. A member of several professional lawn and landscape societies and associations, Kauffman has published many peer-reviewed and trade magazine articles for the golf industry, and carried out research at the university level that revolutionized warm-season putting green management in Tennessee. He has a doctorate in plant physiology from the University of Tennessee, an MS in horticulture from the University of Arkansas, and a BS in turf and landscape horticulture from the University of Arkansas.

Keeping the Church Relevant with Technology
Dr. Shane Garrison
Associate Professor of Educational Ministries, School of Theology
Vice President for Enrollment Services
Campbellsville University
Campbellsville, KY
By embracing innovation, churches can identify strategies to modernize the church and connect with today's youth – tomorrow's leaders – via social media and other technologies. Says Dr. Garrison: "Technology and modernization are not usually words people use when describing the church. The hesitation to embrace change is making it hard for Christian leaders to engage youth today. Generation Z are digital natives, their whole lives are dependent on technology and it is necessary for churches to capitalize on this trend to stay relevant now and into the future. Nontraditional communication tools like social media, technology workshops and informal youth ministry meetings will help ensure the church stays relevant. The Christian message doesn't need to change but its delivery can and should."
Dr. Garrison was honored as Campbellsville University's Distinguished Faculty member in 2016. He is also available to discuss the rise of the "Pharaoh Effect" in business and leadership. As a society we are increasingly asking employees to do more, expect more, and demand more, but with far less resources, staffing, and support.

Sustainable Tourism
Zach Vanasse
Program Manager
The TreadRight Foundation
The travel industry contributed US$7.2 trillion or 9.8% to world GDP in 2015, and is forecast to grow by 4% per annum over the next ten years. As more regions and countries develop their tourism industry, it produces significant impacts on natural resources, consumption patterns, pollution and social systems. The need to protect local wildlife and cultures is more important than ever before. Says Vanasse: "Helping travelers achieve a greater appreciation for a destination is really important to us. Travelers have the power to make conscious choices: eat sustainable seafood, choose a travel company that practices responsible tourism -- such as hiring locals and giving back to the community, and respect local communities and customs."
Vanasse has been interviewed on this topic many times, and recently published an op-ed piece for The Huffington Post Canada on animal abuse in the tourism industry (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/zach-vanasse/animal-tourism_b_16109188.html).
