EXPERT ALERTS:
Low Birth Weight in African-American Women Tied to Racial Identity
Wanda Burton
Assistant Professor, College of Human Environmental Sciences
University of Alabama
Dr. Burton can discuss the disparity in the birth weight of African-American infants compared to the birth weight of Caucasian infants. Low birth weight is the leading cause of infant mortality in black infants in the United States. She has studied the role of racial identity and acculturation on birth weight in a sample of black women living in Alabama. Says Dr. Burton: "Mothers with a strong racial identity reported having low birth weight babies less often than those who scored lower on racial identity. Further exploration of racial identity revealed self-image as the essential element that predicted birth weight. Birth weight increased 4.2 ounces for each additional degree of self-image."

Ensuring Timely, Accessible Care for Veterans
David R. Nelson
CEO
Veterans Accountable Care Group
"Secretary Shulkin and the entire Veterans Health Administration (VHA) efforts to deliver the right care at the right time in the right setting are admirable, whether that care is delivered inside or outside the VHA traditional delivery model. VACG/VACO looks to support the VHA's efforts to ensure timely access to needed healthcare services for our nation's heroes."
Nelson is available to discuss the current state of the VA health system; how we can ensure timely, accessible care for the nation's 23 million veterans; and the current and new future options. He is an 11-year Navy veteran and serial entrepreneur who's led the formation of VACO and VACG, Sierra Military Healthcare Services, and xG Health Solutions, among others.

Should Smokeless Tobacco Be Banned in All Sports Stadiums?
Dr. Brad Rodu
Professor of Medicine
University of Louisville
"Many leading medical experts, including those at the American Cancer Society and the FDA, agree that smokeless tobacco products pose a substantially lower risk than cigarettes and can play an important role in helping smokers quit a habit that kills over 480,000 Americans a year, according to the CDC. Allegations that smokeless tobacco causes a litany of cancers are grossly exaggerated. The available scientific evidence provides no support for the anti-tobacco movement's claims. Tobacco prohibitionists commonly complain that 'tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States.' This is grossly misleading, as it purposefully conflates smoking's dramatic fatality figures with the far more benign use of smokeless tobacco. The CDC estimates that over 480,000 Americans die every year from smoking-attributable diseases, but the comparable number attributed to smokeless tobacco use is so low that the CDC has never attempted to provide an estimate. The facts about smokeless tobacco versus cigarettes should not be twisted to satisfy an anti-tobacco agenda or to influence public health policy."
Dr. Rodu is a professor of medicine at the University of Louisville, where he holds an endowed chair in tobacco harm reduction research. For the past 20 years, Dr. Rodu have been involved in research and policy development regarding tobacco harm reduction (THR).
