GOP Hopeful Fiorina Says Drug Addiction Shouldn't be Criminalized
Kyle Simon
Director of Policy and Advocacy
Center for Lawful Access and Abuse Deterrence (CLAAD)
"Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina said Monday that the United States needs to change the way it treats drug addicts. 'Drug addiction shouldn't be criminalized,' said Fiorina during a conference call with reporters on Monday, soon after announcing her long-shot run for the White House. 'We need to treat it appropriately.' Fiorina said a number of Republican governors have made changes to their criminal justice systems that have reduced prison populations while driving down violent crime rates. She cited 'decriminalizing drug addiction and drug use' as an example of a successful reform but did not elaborate on what sort of decriminalization she would like to see nationally."
Simon manages policy and advocacy initiatives, provides policy analysis and drafting, directs rapid response efforts, and oversees a coalition of allied organizations focused on advancing common goals. His background includes several years of health care policy, advocacy, and political experience. He has worked with policy makers on Medicare, Medicaid, and regulatory issues, served members of Congress, managed a statewide political organization representing the president of the United States, and held leadership roles in multiple political campaigns.

Mother's Day: Ways to Appreciate and Bond With Your Mom
Dr. Frieda Birnbaum
Research Psychologist, Psychoanalyst
Birnbaum shares ways your readers can appreciate and bond with their mom: "Respect: Mothers love to know their children love and respect them. Offering a thank you, remembering to call -- little gestures like these may seem small to you but, they bring an abundance of joy to moms. Inquire: Ask your mother what is going on in her life. Keep aware of all major things. Moms love it when you remember something important to them that they weren't expecting you to remember, because it shows you attentively listen to them. Peaceful: Chances are you and your mother may not see eye-to-eye on everything -- or anything for that matter. It's OK, though. If you can accept your mom for who she is and accept that you both are different, you'll have many days of peace between you. Surprise: it doesn't have to just be on Mother's Day, but any day is a good day to surprise your mom by taking her out shopping or to dinner. If you regularly take your mom off guard with something positive, it'll make her very happy."
Based in the New York metro area, Dr. Birnbaum is the author of "What Price Power: An In-Depth Study of the Professional Woman in a Relationship." She's an expert on depression, women's issues, and attaining happiness. She was featured on "Oprah" and "20/20" as the oldest woman in the U.S. to have twins.

Treadmill Training Safety Tips
Chan Gannaway
Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Education Director
Orangetheory Fitness
"With the recent media discussions about treadmill safety and the unfortunate and fatal event regarding the Facebook executive, here are five tips for a safe treadmill training experience: 1) Work at intensities where you feel under control; 2) Identify where the emergency stop button or cord is located; 3) Do not jump onto the rails while training on the treadmill; 4) Keep your eyes and head forward at all times. If you turn your head, your body tends to follow; 5) Do not leave your treadmill running to exit the treadmill for any reason."
Gannaway is a certified personal trainer and the fitness education director at OTF, a national fitness franchise with more than 200 studios and the only one that uses heart rate monitors while people are strength training and working out on treadmills. The heart rate monitor is a critical component in the workout and allows trainers to supervise and safely provide the maximum exercise benefit.
