EXPERT ALERTS:
Impact of Father Absence on Sexual Behavior
Catherine Salmon
Professor, Psychology
University of Redlands
"That both males and females engage in more casual sexual behavior when they have grown up in father-absent homes suggests a sexual strategy or behavioral pattern that is influenced by information about relationships present in the early environment. And that the influence is not only on girls (which is what most of the literature focuses on). Females also experienced more negative reactions to one-night stands or casual sex, which may make them more susceptible to depression and anxiety when engaging in such activities."
Dr. Salmon's recently completed research, "Casual Sex and College Students: Sex Differences and the Impact of Father Absence," is important from a student health perspective in terms of informing us of a factor that may increase casual sexual behavior, important in terms of targeting safe-sex messaging and mental health services (if father-absence girls are more likely to engage in behaviors that may result in negative emotional reactions). Dr. Salmon has authored two books and made several appearances on television. She is based in Redlands, Calif.
