EXPERT ALERTS:
Historical Perspective Needed in U.S. Politics
Lewis Gould
Visiting Distinguished Professor
Monmouth College
"Because so much of what passes for political analysis in the United States is so uninformed about historical precedents, a perspective on the past is necessary to sort out the transient from the significant. Take the letter that Republican senators sent last week to Iran about ongoing nuclear talks. How many people remember that in March 1919, Henry Cabot Lodge circulated a 'round-robin' document signed by more than one-third of the Republican senators saying they would not support Woodrow Wilson's proposed Peace Treaty after World War I that included the League of Nations? That action set the stage for the eventual defeat of the Treaty of Versailles in the Senate and American refusal to join the League. Not an inviting example of wise Senate involvement in foreign policy for the current 47 solons. Yet current commentary cannot go back to measure what has happened before when the Senate tilts with the White House. Historical perspective enriches popular understanding."
Gould is Eugene C. Barker Centennial Professor Emeritus in American History at the University of Texas at Austin and currently a Visiting Distinguished Professor at Monmouth College. He is the author of many political history books, including "Theodore Roosevelt," "The Modern American Presidency" and, most recently, "The Republicans: A History of the Grand Old Party." He has a wealth of knowledge regarding political issues and historical expertise.

New Survey Says Gun Ownership Down in America
Sheriff Richard Mack
Founder
The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association
"Is gun ownership falling? The answer is yes, at least if you believe a new General Social Survey by the National Opinion Research Center. Supposedly, since the late 1970s, the percentage of homes with a gun has fallen from approximately 50 percent to 32 percent. Time magazine also points to a PEW Research survey that has done a couple much more limited surveys that suggest a similar drop in gun ownership over time."
Sheriff Mack, a former sheriff in Arizona, disagrees with the survey and is available for interviews.
