EXPERT ALERTS:
Working More Efficiently
Christopher Cabrera
CEO
Xactly
"You don't need to re-invent the wheel every five minutes; you just need to sit down and consider how to be more effective at work. Is Facebook taking up more of your day than you'd like to admit? Turn off notifications for given periods of time. Do you tend to jump between tasks before finishing one? Make a list of three important things you'd like to complete as soon as you sit down at your desk, and set small, attainable goals for yourself throughout the day. Do you find that ad-hoc requests are distracting you from completing these goals? Learn how to say 'no' when you don't have the bandwidth to take on more projects."
Cabrera is the CEO of Xactly Corporation and is a seasoned executive with more than two decades of successful senior management experience at both early-stage and public companies. He is a noted industry expert in issues relating to sales performance management, sales compensation, commission, employee engagement, incentive compensation, benchmarking, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) delivery models. He was named the 2011 "Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the USC Marshall School of Business. He is also the author of "Game the Plan" (River Grove Books, 2014) and co-author of "Xactly Sales Compensation for Dummies" (Wiley Publishing, 2006), as well as a contributing writer to such industry publications as Inc.com, Selling Power Magazine, and destinationCRM.

Data Migrations -- Looming End of Support for SQL Server 2005
Alan Arnold
Chief Technology Officer
Vision Solutions
"According to research firm IDC, about 800,000 servers around the world still rely on Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Unfortunately, Microsoft will end extended support for SQL Server 2005 tomorrow (April 12, 2016), meaning those still running it will no longer receive security updates. Why so many? According to business continuity, disaster recovery and migration solutions provider Vision Solutions, in its 2016 State of Resilience Report, nearly two-thirds of IT executives delay important data migrations, such as moving from a legacy platform such as SQL Server 2005 out of fear of downtime or lack of resources. Migration trepidation can be a thing of the past if IT leaders simply take a closer look at their IT infrastructure needs and choose the right option to manage things like downtime and resilience, IT costs, testing, data loss and functionality concerns and staffing limitations."
Arnold is responsible for the global technology, services and support strategy for Vision Solutions. He joined Vision in 2000, and since then has served in a variety of positions, including EVP of technologies and president and COO of worldwide operations. Prior to joining Vision Solutions, Arnold was a senior technology executive in the management consulting practice of Ernst & Young LLC; the national director of technologies at StorageTek (XL/Datacomp); and worked for several other companies in technology and management roles. He is recognized as an expert in advanced technologies, business process improvements and managed availability solutions. He has authored or co-authored five books on technology and business topics that have been published worldwide, has written numerous articles for some of the leading publications in the industry, and has had his work presented to the United States Senate Technology subcommittee and State of California.

Politics and Policy Influencing the LGBT Movement
Don Haider-Markel
Professor and Chair of Department of Political Science
University of Kansas
"The reactions of the NBA, PayPal, and others is a small victory for the LGBT rights movement and the transgender movement, but given that North Carolina's new law prohibits local government from adding discrimination protections, the victory is somewhat hollow. And given the addition of new religious freedom laws in states like Mississippi, I don't believe anyone in the LGBT community is celebrating at this moment. This type of law is exactly what SCOTUS struck down in the 1996 Colorado case, Romer v. Evans. The Colorado law was passed at the ballot box in 1992."
Haider-Markel is co-author of "Transgender Rights and Politics: Groups, Issue Framing & Policy Adoption," a book on transgender politics and policy that examines the effects of laws addressing sexual orientation. He has been following the reaction to the North Carolina law that has caused several businesses to abandon plans to do business in the state.
