EXPERT ALERTS:
Keeping Your Private Information Secure During the Holiday Season
Dr. Rajin Koonjbearry
Professor, College of Engineering & Information Sciences
DeVry University, Dallas
"With the added threat of retailer hacking, cybercrime is at an all-time high for today's consumer. An ill-informed consumer is a hacker's primary target, so this holiday season consumers need to take responsibility for their own protection."
Koonjbearry is available to discuss how consumers can keep their private information secure from cybercrime and in-store hacking when shopping this holiday season, especially during Cyber Monday on Dec. 1.

How to Survive Mentally Challenging Relatives at Thanksgiving
Dr. Frieda Birnbaum
Research Psychologist, Psychoanalyst
"Stay away from politics. Some relatives may seek to instigate a confrontation with you by firing off their political perspectives that they know you disagree with. Don't argue with them, as you will only embolden them and will work yourself into an emotional tizzy. Nodding your head or refusing to react will likely defuse the situation and they may move onto someone else to annoy."
Based in the New York metropolitan area, Dr. Birnbaum is the author of "What Price Power: An In-Depth Study of the Professional Woman in a Relationship." She's an expert on depression, women's issues, and attaining happiness. She is available to provide tips on how to survive mentally challenging relatives during the holidays.

Coping With Holiday Stress
Dr. Dave Sharar
Managing Director
Chestnut Global Partners
The holiday season is often a difficult time for many people. The joyfulness they are intended to engender can also heighten one's anxiety, particularly if you're feeling stressed at work, or if you're grappling with any number of personal or family issues -- in which case, the holidays can serve as a reminder of what is missing in our life. Says Sharar: "There are practical coping and relief strategies that address the 'triggers' that heighten anxiety around the holidays (not limited to caregiving or even concerns over a potential bonus). It's also an opportunity to inventory and address underlying causes -- weight gain, diet, depression, etc. -- that can help you relieve stress and achieve mental health during and beyond the holiday season."
Dr. Sharar has published over 70 articles, many peer-reviewed and published in leading academic and trade publications.

Get Smart About Antibiotics Week: Knowing the Alternatives
Hoji Alimi
Chief Science Officer
Ruthigen
This week (Nov. 17-23), the United States is collaborating with Europe, Australia and Canada in the observance of Get Smart About Antibiotics Week. As antibiotic resistance continues to grow, there is a need to develop new methods and tools to battle infection. The CDC describes antibiotic resistance as one of the world's most pressing health threats. President Obama has issued an executive order calling for a special task force to address the issue, with the development of new drugs being a top priority. Antibiotic resistance now costs the U.S. economy $35 billion annually, including approximately $20 billion in direct healthcare costs, according to the CDC. Infection with antibiotic-resistant bacteria claims upwards of 20,000 American lives annually. Says Alimi: "Surgical site infection is a growing problem with a heavy cost, in terms of health care expense and burden. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) cost the U.S. healthcare system approximately $10 billion annually, with surgical site infections contributing the most to overall costs (about 34 percent)."

Tax Season Identity Theft
Janice Krueger
Greatland Corporation
"Traditional mail is one of the main sources of identity theft during tax season and is one of the IRS' biggest concern, so they are continually looking for ways to protect taxpayers' secure information."
Krueger is available to serve as a source on how tax season adds an identity theft tactic, the U.S. mail. Through a government advisory program, Greatland has led the way with their TIN truncation requirement on W-2 and 1099 forms and also redesigned W-2 forms to discourage fraud attempts through the clear envelope window, making it impossible to see a Social Security number without opening. Greatland also strongly encourages businesses to use electronic delivery for tax reporting, as it provides online secure delivery and requires no physical mail.
