EXPERT ALERTS:
Cuba: Looming Industries, Agents of Change
Kislaya Prasad
Professor of Logistics, Business and Public Policy
University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business
"[Beyond hospitality and tourism] the reality of Cuba is one of crumbling infrastructure, which could be an opportunity for many companies. Internet penetration is very low, and there will be investments in that area. The likes of farm machinery and automobiles could be next. The country also has a very educated workforce, and health care is relatively advanced. U.S. companies could locate there or through subsidiaries to take advantage of this talent -- but much farther down the road… [In a post-Castro Cuba] the Communist Party and its younger leadership will still be a significant force, but hope is that as free enterprise -- if not political openness -- takes root, and reforms deepen, we will be on an irreversible course. Change will occur relatively quickly for a number of reasons: The fall in oil prices has significantly weakened Venezuela, which has been one of the main financial supporters of the Cuban government. The leaders are faced with the stark reality of a failed economic system, and realization that market-based reforms are the only way out."
As director of UMD's Center for International Business Education and Research, Prasad recently visited Cuba to assess the business climate,in preparation to lead a group of U.S. scholars to Cuba in May 2016.

An 'Uber' Solution for Local Trucking
Peyton Inge
Attorney
Chamblee, Ryan, Kershaw & Anderson in Dallas
The "Uberization" of American commerce is now rolling into another heavily fragmented sector: the $80 billion-a-year local trucking industry. Convoy, a Seattle start up founded by former Amazon employees, has launched an on-demand service with the goal of giving local truckers -- specializing in jobs that can be completed in a day -- a more efficient way to connect with clients. Says Inge: "The implications for Uber's business model on any delivery-based industry are undeniable, but the impact on commercial transport is uncertain because of the liabilities involved." Matching truckers with clients is typically handled by brokers, who provide both logistical support and a structure to allocate risk for any cargo damaged during transport. "The benefits of an Uber-like system to small companies with intermittent shipping needs are clear, but larger companies may be less inclined to trust valuable cargo to unfamiliar or randomly selected providers."

Influx of Retail Bankruptcies and the Impact on Commercial Real Estate
Tom Onder

"Recently, there has been an influx of large retail stores going bankrupt. These bankruptcies are notably impacting the owners of commercial properties formerly occupied by these now-bankrupt companies. There are legal ramifications and remedies to ensure these owners are rightfully compensated."
