EXPERT ALERTS:
Understanding Forest Fires
Albert Simeoni
Fire Protection Engineering Professor
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
"Even today, despite progress in modeling and experimentation, the spreading of forest fires is not well understood. This area of research is challenging, interesting, and critical since it has the potential to greatly impact on the safety of people, goods, and the environment."
As a former firefighter in Corsica, Dr. Simeoni has 19 years of experience and is an internationally recognized leader in wildland fires, building protection, and fire science. He is a certified fire and explosion investigator, and has developed experimental, analytical, and numerical techniques to better understand fire dynamics and to predict fire behavior. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Wildland Fire Network, National Association of Fire Investigators, and former director of Wildland Fires and Simulations at Jensen Hughes. He is fluent in English, French and Corsican.

Independent Catalonia Would Face Steep Economic Climb
Kislaya Prasad
Professor of Logistics, Business and Public Policy
University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business
"Independence comes with losing EU membership, meaning that trade is simple and, importantly, free. An independent Catalonia would have to apply for EU membership, and there is no grandfathering in -- membership is granted only by unanimous vote of the existing EU countries. If the parting with Spain is very, very bitter, then Spain itself would be able to hold up its membership. That would not be good for the Catalonian economy. Trade relations with Europe is essential, but so, too, is entry to the EU. And that will require Catalonia to build all new institutions of government from the ground up and maintain a healthy balance sheet, even despite the hefty Spanish debt it's likely to inherit. It will be messy. It would be messy in the best of circumstances."
Prasad also directs UMD's Center for International Business Education and Research and is a Brookings Institution guest scholar.

When It Comes to College Savings Basics, Parents Struggle to Make the Grade
Kyla Michaud

"While saving for college is a top priority for a majority of families, many parents still stumble over a number of college savings fundamentals. Taking time early to map out a savings strategy that fits your family's unique college goals can help you stay on track, and feel prepared when the time comes for your child to head to campus."
