Prominent Legal Publication Ranks McCarter & English's Products Liability Practice Group No. 1
NJ Law Journal Cites Nationwide & International Work In Variety of Industry Sectors Where Products Liability Is An Issue
NEWARK, N.J., May 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- McCarter & English has been named litigation department of the year in the products liability category by a prominent publication that covers the legal profession.
The New Jersey Law Journal ranked as tops in the state McCarter's Products Liability Practice Group, which represents clients in all phases of products matters – from risk management and litigation avoidance, to trial preparation, to trials and appeals.
The group, which focuses on three key areas – life sciences and pharmaceuticals, mass and toxic torts, and consumer and industrial products – was cited for its work as national and regional counsel, medical device defense counsel, and lead counsel in multidistrict litigations across a broad range of industries. Those sectors include pharmaceuticals and medical devices, aerospace, nuclear energy, consumer and automotive products, and asbestos and chemicals.
"This is quite an honor. The bar is high because there are a number of firms with strong products groups," said Edward J. Fanning, Jr., the Newark-based partner who leads the firm-wide practice group, which has eight partners in Newark, 11 among the firm's other seven offices and 33 attorneys altogether.
"The esteem in which the Law Journal is held makes it an even greater honor," Fanning said of the newspaper, which is part of the American Lawyer chain. "The greatest tribute is when clients place their trust in us and retain us to defend them, but this is a nice feather in our cap."
The Law Journal noted that McCarter selects, trains and coordinates defense counsel domestically and internationally, handles a litany of pre-trial issues, analyzes medical and scientific literature, prepares expert witnesses, challenges adversaries' experts and their junk science, and regularly tries cases to verdict. Particularly impressive, the Law Journal wrote, is McCarter's "deft use of technology and personnel to handle cases, regardless of the scale or locale, from intake through case and calendar management, discovery, and disposition, whether by trial or settlement."
The eight New Jersey-based partners in the group are Fanning, who is a director and a past president of the New Jersey Defense Association and current state representative to the national Defense Research Institute, David Kott, David Cooner, Matthew Tharney, Debra Perry, John Garde, Kenneth Meyer and Natalie Watson.
