BETHESDA, Md., March 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Jordan has awarded Abt Associates a $51.7 million cooperative agreement to implement the Health Service Delivery Activity (HSDA), which builds on Abt's 15-plus years enhancing the health system in Jordan.
Under this new activity, Abt will work with the Ministry of Health and NGOs to improve primary health care services to women of reproductive age and children under five, with special attention to serving Syrian refugees residing in Jordanian communities. Abt will leverage its expertise in maternal, newborn and child health, as well as family planning and reproductive health, to reduce maternal and newborn deaths and increase the use of family planning services. The project will tackle bottlenecks in the delivery of health care services and address other major challenges, which include gender-based violence, non-communicable diseases and nutrition.
"Abt has a long history of improving the lives of Jordanians through our work to strengthen health care delivery systems and improve access to quality health services, especially in the area of family planning and reproductive health," said Diana R. Silimperi, MD, Abt's Division Vice President for International Health. "By drawing on this experience and strengthening the delivery of health services at all levels, we will help Jordan achieve its national Sustainable Development Goals and improve overall health throughout the nation."
Partners of Abt on the HSDA program include leading Jordanian institutions in quality improvement and health information systems, as well as two international organizations – the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the Population Council.
