Pulse of Pennsylvania Registered Nurse Workforce Report Available
May 6 - 12 is National Nurses Week.
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Department of Health (DOH) Acting Secretary Dr. Karen Murphy today announced the release of the latest Pulse of Pennsylvania Registered Nurse Workforce report, coinciding with National Nurses Week, which runs each year from May 6 – 12. National Nurses Week recognizes the importance of ethics in nursing and acknowledges the strong commitment, compassion, and care nurses display in their practice and profession.
The Pulse of Pennsylvania's Registered Nurse Workforce report provides lawmakers, researchers, academics, and other agencies with information about the characteristics and distribution of Pennsylvania's registered nurse (RN) workforce.
"Our nurses are vital to the health of our residents, and we want them to know that they are respected and valued," Dr. Murphy said. "This report shows that 92 percent of RNs were satisfied or very satisfied with their career. It also indicates that 20 percent of our RNs are 60 or older and are nearing retirement age, leaving the workforce soon. We want our young people to consider this important and satisfying career path, which continues to be in high demand."
The DOH surveys RNs every two years when they renew their licenses. The workforce report contains comprehensive information on RNs licensed in Pennsylvania and those employed here in nursing. This information includes:
- Number of RNs by county, age, and work setting;
- Age, sex, race, and ethnicity;
- Education and advanced nursing practice information;
- Employment status; and
- Professional satisfaction/dissatisfaction.
Pennsylvania nurses work in many different settings. More than half of all nurses that work in Pennsylvania are employed by hospitals. Other employment settings for nurses include long term care facilities, home health, ambulatory care, school health, academic institutions, insurance providers, correctional facilities, public health agencies, and policy, planning, regulatory, and licensing agencies.
