Stakeholder Views on Telehealth from the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) Annual Meeting
Telehealth, including remote monitoring, video telemedicine, and mobile health (mHealth), is central to the healthcare delivery transformation by way of the converging healthcare and information communication technology (ICT) sectors. This study analyzes survey data taken at the 2013 ATA conference. Drivers and restraints, 5 and 10 year areas of opportunity, environmental points (e.g., gamification), accountable care organizations (ACOs), and predictions are presented. The surveyed markets include home and disease management monitoring, personal emergency response systems (PERS), video diagnostic consultation, remote doctor/specialist services, tele-imaging, activity monitoring, wellness programs, remote cardiac ECG, and tele-mental health.
Executive Summary
• The telehealth industry is in reality a mix of different sub-markets, each with aspects of business models which can vary dramatically. Telehealth typically includes both preventive and curative aspects that span the entire patient experience from hospital to home.
• The home is the leading area of impact and opportunity in the industry, including use of remote patient monitoring (RPM) in the view of stakeholders over the next decade. This is driving interest in RPM by companies in the North American market, including major Tier I medical device firms, as well as startups both within and outside the region attempting to enter the United States, many observed from Asia-Pacific.
• Frost & Sullivan views many of these non-US startup firms as having limited to no differentiation or field sales strategy, however, and are often touting a similar devices/hub/cloud by way of Android operating system (OS) value proposition. This includes, in most observed cases by our team, a poorly designed marketing strategy that assumes the ability to ride the wave of RPM without understanding the complexity of the market and current competition from leading firms such as Bosch Healthcare, Honeywell HomMed, Ideal Life.
• After home health/disease management RPM, respondents view the video telemedicine (provider-patient video diagnostic consultation and remote specialist services) and tele-mental health as other areas set to impact the market in the next X years. In our view, this aligns with the main industry markets, which are seen as the leading areas for business opportunities.
• Access to care and cost savings are seen as leading drivers in adoption by respondents, and reimbursement is seen as a key point of restraint. Continued changes in payment models and expansion of reimbursement and vendor strategies to achieve payment will have a positive impact on telehealth as the situation evolves.
• To understand global market attractiveness, different regions were evaluated by survey respondents regarding the projected speed of telehealth adoption in the nextX years. North America led, followed by Europe and Africa, while the Gulf Cooperation Council (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) was viewed as the slowest to adopt telehealth solutions.
• Innovative technology can bolster the telehealth market and its adaptability. Growth in telehealth technology is evident from an increase in the number of patents filed under telehealth, accounting for X% of wireless-related patents (Iliev, Tang, Merwe and Tannock, 2011). The surge in telehealth patents is due to the demand for viable telehealth devices that can lower healthcare costs as well as to the changing interests of providers and vendors.
• The convergence of technology has created the issue of patent infringement and increased barriers of entry for new entrants.
