Pure Paint for Now People Exhibition to Display Paintings Never Offered Before to Utah Audiences
Unique exhibition explores the challenges and complexities of contemporary painting and its constant pursuit to reinvent itself
SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery (http://weber-edu-dova.org/shawgallery/) is scheduled to open the state of Utah's first painting exhibition focused on contemporary and emerging painters of the twenty-first century. Questions of imagery, surface, form and scale are addressed in surprising ways in the collection of paintings curated for the exhibit. Featured artists include both prominent Utah native, Ricky Allman and New York artist, Joanne Greenbaum, who most recently showcased her work in Germany. The exhibit, 'Pure Paint for Now People,' opens on Friday, February 27 and is jointly curated by Lydia Gravis, director of the Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery and Matthew Choberka, an established painter and associate professor at Weber State University.
"In creating 'Pure Paint for Now People,' we endeavored to explore the paradoxes in the ways art can be represented," said Choberka. "These artists' concerns are wide-ranging, from the role of representation and materiality to the influence of technology; demonstrating how painting affirms its place in art, while respecting the need to adapt in certain circumstances."
This premiere event brings nationally and internationally-recognized artists together to showcase pieces addressing the complexities of art and its varied interpretations. 'Pure Paint for Now People' offers viewers the opportunity to challenge generally accepted theories relating to art, thereby creating their own definition and meaning. The exhibition will include original paintings from well-known artists including: Rebecca Campbell, Mary Weatherford, Kim Dorland, Blake Rayne, and Sangram Majumdar.
"This refreshing perspective on the significance of painting in the dialogue of contemporary art allows viewers to contemplate how it has impacted their lives," said Madonne Miner, Dean of the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities. "We are proud to offer Utahns an incredible showcase of stunning visual compositions by these world-renowned artists."
"Pure Paint for Now People" is free and open to the public. An opening reception will be held Fri., Feb. 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibit will run from Fri., Feb. 27, 2015 to Fri., April 10, 2015. The Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information please visit:
