LOUDON, Tenn., Nov. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A quilting group in the foothills of Appalachia link community, tradition and art stitch-by-stitch.
Members of the Tellico Village Quilters Guild make and donate quilts to veterans, cancer patients and charity organizations. Since 2004 when the club started counting quilts made for the community, they have donated around 5,000 pieces.
The club's 300 members, mostly retirees and almost all residents of East Tennessee's Tellico Village, recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a quilt show sharing charitable work and the beauty of their craft.
"Quilting is about a lot more than stitching together pieces of cloth," said Helen Willis, the guild's current president. "When someone wraps themself in a handmade quilt, the warmth they feel comes from the heart."
During 15 quilting bees held throughout the year, members gather together to work on projects, share tips and enjoy spending time together. They also hold an annual quilt show, open to the public and growing each year.
"When I started the Village Quilters Guild I envisioned a place where quilters could gather to work—what it is today is so much more," said Carole Spahn, the guild's founder. "The women in this organization are truly making an impact on the lives of others."
Tellico Village is a planned, active adult community, renowned for its strong volunteer culture and celebrates more than 200 resident-managed clubs, organizations and non-profits.
