Rael Supports Hawking: 'There's No Need of a God to Explain the Universe!'

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Raelians worldwide are following with interest the heated debate sparked by British physicist Stephen Hawking's latest book, "The Grand Design."

In the book, Hawking says God had no role in the creation of the universe and evokes spontaneous creation to explain the existence of something out of nothing. Britain's religious leaders have reacted to these pronouncements in much the same way, defending an almighty god "upon whose activity everything ultimately depends for existence."

"This is a lot of blah-blah-blah for nothing, since there is no God," said Rael, founder and leader of the International Raelian Movement. Rael has previously said he disagrees with Hawking's vision of Earth humans "colonizing" the cosmos, but he said today that he agrees with the scientist's view that "there is no need for a god to explain the existence of the universe."

Writing in The Times of London, Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said, "The Bible simply isn't interested in how the universe came into being."

"This is a really funny comment, since the scriptures still teach that God created the universe," Rael said. "If Rabbi Sacks wants to be consistent in what he says, creation of the universe by God should be removed from all the religious books."

"The whole debate revolves around the need of most human beings to find a beginning to the universe," said Brigitte Boisselier, Ph.D., spokesperson for the International Raelian Movement. "Spontaneous creation or creation by an almighty being cannot satisfy any rational brain, and the only alternative is the one brought by Rael – that the universe is infinite in both time and space."

The Raelian theory of an infinite universe that has always existed has recently found support from physicist and cosmologist Wun-Yi Shu of National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. He recently described a model in which the universe has neither beginning nor end, just alternating periods of expansion and contraction. In his model, Shu also shows that singularities cannot exist in this cosmos. (1)

"The concept of infinity in time and space closes the debate about an almighty god at the center of everything and yields another form of spirituality, the Raelian spirituality," Boisselier explained. "Infinite life forms exist out there and one of those civilizations has created humanity and all other life on Earth as part of an infinite cycle of scientific creation. Those creators are waiting for us to grow up and stop looking at them as gods!"

She added that physicists and biologists "will hopefully merge their observations soon so this debate about an almighty God can be left behind."
