WASHINGTON, June 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Relay Foods, an online market for sustainable food and everyday groceries, has announced plans to raise money for Frager's Hardware, a beloved Capitol Hill establishment that has been locally owned and operated since the 1920s. Relay Foods will donate $10 per gift card sold from its new pickup point on Capitol Hill, located between 8th and I Street SE. On both June 10 and 17, from 4 pm to 8 pm, Relay Foods team members will offer the gift cards. One representative will also offer cards in front of Frager's Hardware.
"We are now part of this community," said Mara McLaurin, the Relay Foods Street Team Member who developed the fundraising plan. "This is our way to support a local business that has offered such great service to the community."
On Wednesday, June 5, a major fire began at Frager's, sending black clouds of smoke throughout the neighborhood. While no lives were lost, over 200 firefighters were brought in to contain the fire, which took over 4 hours. On Friday, police and firemen began an investigation to determine the cause of the conflagration. On Saturday, Frager's began selling products again from a stall at Eastern Market, two blocks from the old storefront.
As a champion of buying food from locally owned grocery stores, restaurants, artisan producers, and farms, Relay Foods is also dedicated to supporting members of Washington D.C. and Baltimore's local business ecosystem.
A new type of online grocery store, Relay Foods hand-picks local produce and oven-fresh baked goods, and then brings orders to a convenient central location for pickup. Relay Foods saves customers the hassle of shopping in person while supporting sustainable agriculture and local businesses.
