Remote Island in the Philippines watches the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight live for the first time
MANILA, Philippines, May 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Island of Bantayan in Northern Cebu in the Philippines watched their country's boxing hero Manny Pacquiao fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. during a live public screening on the island, which brought boundless inspiration to many who were still recovering from the effects of Typhoon Haiyan which struck the Philippines in late 2013.

The public screening on the island was made possible with the effort of a large British life insurance company operating in the country in its bid to bring inspiration to the typhoon survivors. The screening was for the first time held simultaneously in Santa Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos municipalities on Bantayan Island.
Bantayan Island was one of the worst-hit islands in the country as the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people. After almost two years since the destruction, the island together with the affected provinces in the Central Visayas region is still recovering through the joint efforts of charitable and private organizations.
"How can we watch the fight if we don't have electricity?" asked Santa Fe Mayor Jose Esgana. "We are delighted that the fight has been brought to our island. Everyone was excited about the match, and we support Manny all the way to the end."
The live screening on Bantayan drew nearly 8,000 men, women and children from neighbouring villages. The company also brought live coverage of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight to 7 other communities in Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Quezon, Albay, Aklan, and Northern Samar.
