Report: $5.4 Billion-Dollar Demand for Lab Automation Driving Partnerships
NEW YORK, July 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Companies that can help clinical laboratories automate their operations are growing, represent a five billion-dollar annual market, according to IVD market research firm Kalorama Information says lab automation systems. The firm looks at the status of lab automation in both clinical and drug discovery lab segments every two years, and they say the strong demand is driving major IVD companies to partner with companies that can help them enhance their analytical tools with automation systems. Their latest report, Lab Automation Markets, 4th Edition, was published earlier in the year.

For automation suppliers, these arrangements can lead to sales that might otherwise not been achieved without the attraction of the IVD systems. For IVD companies, these arrangements offer an opportunity to sell their analyzers, analytics capabilities, and initial reagents/consumables hand-in-hand with an automation supplier's systems. Kalorama says that in this way, the IVD company will obtain a dependable stream of revenue from the future sales of reagents/consumables. For automation suppliers, these arrangements can lead to sales that might otherwise not been achieved without the attraction of the IVD systems.
"The cooperation with IVD suppliers represents a novel way of doing business for automation suppliers," said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information.
These partnerships often will place both the IVD and automation supplier in a stronger position to complete a sale of an integrated solution to a customer, such as a hematology laboratory, who does not have to shop elsewhere to fulfill his automation requirements.
Among the partnerships mentioned in the report:
- In April 2014, Roche and Hitachi renewed their alliance in the diagnostics business with an extended 10-year agreement. Roche and Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation's renewed 10-year contract continues the joint development and manufacture of the next generation of instruments and workflow automation solutions for medical laboratories. The renewed alliance marks a significant milestone towards new platform solutions in Roche's immunochemistry and clinical chemistry business.
- In 2013, Beckman Coulter and IRIS Diagnostics, launched the Alifax automated Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) analysis system through a distribution agreement with Alifax. The automated ESR analysis systems are designed to fit all workloads, including small hospitals, large reference laboratories, core laboratories and satellite locations. The automated system delivers increased productivity, efficiencies in laboratory labor utilization and reduced turnaround times.
- In January 2015, bioMérieux, a provider of in vitro diagnostics, and Copan, a manufacturer of pre-analytic automation, signed a partnership in clinical microbiology laboratory automation. Copan has granted distribution rights for its automated platforms to bioMérieux, including the WASP Walk-Away Specimen Processor and the WASPLab solutions which automate microbiology laboratory tasks and provide digital imaging and analysis. The agreement combines Copan's know-how in pre-analytics with bioMérieux expertise in microbiological diagnostics. Since Jan. 1 2015, bioMérieux has been Copan's exclusive distributor in France, and a co-exclusive distributor in Germany and the UK for distributing Copan's WASP and WASPLab systems. bioMérieux's commercialization rights will gradually be expanded, on the basis of co-exclusive distribution, to many countries.
Lab Automation Markets, 4th Edition, contains a list of the top companies in automation and the IVD companies, and has specific market estimates for categories of the automation market. More information can be obtained http://www.kaloramainformation.com/redirect.asp?progid=87684&productid=8827604.
