Report: Roche Enhances Companion Diagnostics Offering with Foundation Purchase
NEW YORK, Feb. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Roche's Foundation Medicine purchase is one of many moves by the company over the last two decades designed to cement its position in the IVD industry. The healthcare market research firm says Roche is the number one company in the in vitro diagnostics (IVD) industry, and leads molecular diagnostic products as well. Kalorama provided market share of the top three IVD companies in its report Roche Diagnostics: Company Profile.

Roche said on Monday that it would obtain a majority stake in Foundation Medicine for more than $1 billion. Foundation sequences genes of tumor samples, looking for mutations that can help predict which drug will be most effective for specific patients.
"Roche has stayed ahead of the pack by leapfrogging technology that rivals will have to catch up with," said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information. "24 years ago when they purchased PCR technology critics claimed that the purchase price was too high and that it was not a wise move. That gamble funded their expansion into molecular diagnostics."
Roche produces cancer drugs and plans to use Foundation's testing to enhance drug development. Roche Diagnostics will sell Foundation's tests outside the United States.
Last year Roche also gained an important FDA approval for use of their HPV test in primary screening for cervical cancer.
Kalorama's report looks at the top three IVD companies and Roche's place among them, and provides 2013 segment-level IVD revenue estimates for the company. Roche Diagnostics: Company Profile can be obtained at: http://www.kaloramainformation.com/Roche-Diagnostics-Company-8693179/.
