However, the power consumption in integrated clocks is higher, which will eventually result in the device losing power completely within a short span. A semiconductor clock is able to perform the function of maintaining the current time for the device it is attached to while ensuring minimal power consumption.
Further, the report states that factors like poor accuracy and calibration will pose a significant challenge for the growth of this market. A semiconductor clock faces the issue of poor accuracy as these devices can only be updated per second and not within fractions of seconds. A time base oscillator, which is typically a 32.768 kHz crystal, determines the accuracy of the semiconductor clock. These crystals are very cheap but fall behind in terms of timekeeping, thereby affecting the accuracy of semiconductor clocks. In addition, these crystals are sensitive to temperature fluctuations due to poor calibration during their manufacturing.
