Research and Markets - Scientists Build 360 TB Quartz Coin Data Storage Device
DUBLIN, March 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
A team of scientists from the University of Southampton have built a quartz coin able to store 360 terabytes of data for potentially billions of years. Building upon technology from Hitachi in conjunction with Kyoto University, the scientists used a femtosecond laser to inscribe data on the disk. The entire history of mankind can be recorded and stored on a single 5D quartz coin, while the technology itself could have an unforeseen effect on the data storage industry. The global digital storage devices market is forecast to be worth USD 5.4 billion by 2020, according to a recent report available from Research and Markets, but this value could be higher if 5D technology is commercially released.

The femtosecond laser encodes information in 5 dimensions. The first three dimensions of X, Y and Z denote the nano-grating's location within the coin, while the 4th and 5th dimension exist on the birefringence patterns of the nano-gratings. Quartz was chosen due to its resistance to high temperatures, pressures and stress, in addition to its stable mineral composition and relative abundance on Earth.
The advent of such powerful data storage capabilities will likely influence other markets. The global storage services market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% by 2019, as noted in a recent report. However, this prediction could be lower if 5D data storage is adopted by businesses and consumers due to the simplicity of the technology.
The global stand alone cloud storage market is set to grow at a CAGR of 31.12% by 2019, as forecast in an industry report. Again, this forecast could be lower if 5D technology is made public in the near future thanks to the incredible storage possibilities it offers.
